Colorado Officials
Say Noses Offended

Denver, April 10. Departmental
heads and employes in the offices of
the state treasurer, industrial com
mission and state auditor are back
on the job and their threat to stage
a "walkoat" has been withdrawn,
following the removal by Col. Clif
ton H. Wilder of the state constabu
lary of large quantities of "home
brew," "moonshine" and other illicit
liquors from the basement of the
state capitol.
For several weeks the office force
of the three state departments,
whose rooms are located directly
above the bis vault in the basement,
where the confiscated booze was
cached, had . been "bombed" and
"gassed" by the "moonshine bat
tery" until, fearing an epidemic of
"D. T.'s," an appeal was made to
Gov. Oliver H. Shoup for tfle re
moval of the offensive booze.
The air in the basement vault is
extremely warm. The conglomerate
concoctions continuously fermented,
with the result that corks popped
from bottles and bungs burst from
barrels, sounding like the rattle of
light artillery. Air ducts carried the
stench of the souring bootleg up
ward to the offices, imparting to
that portion' of the state capitol oc
cupied by the treasury department,
the state industrial commission and
the auditor an aroma similar to that
of the old-fashioned grog shop.
The barrage was lifted after an
investigation by the governor's of
fice and the state board of capitol
managers.
In Germany skilled workmen for
merly occupied in the manufacture
of arms and ammunition tire now
being trained to turn out high grade
parts for automobiles.

Topeka, Kan., April 10. Police
Chief Hannon was given another in
sight into the queer ways of women
the other day.
When Hannon answered a pro
longed ring on the telephone an ex
cited woman's voice gasped:
"My neighbor's chickens are ruin
ing my garden. Come right down
here and shot them."
The chief explained that a com
plaint would have to be sworn out.
"Oh, I couldn't do that," fairly
shrieked the owner of the garden.
"She's one of my best friends. I
wouldn't offend her for the world.
No, the chief didn't swear that is,
not until after he had carefully re
placed the receiver on its hook.
