Three years ago Miss Caccilia . .Smeall, pretty young: Omaha girl of y220 Park avenue, knit a pair of sox. They were nice sox of fine, soft wool; without a single rough place that might hurt a tired soldier's feet. Mis SnieaM sighed as she tied the ox into a neat bundle to send away. How much nicer it would be if she could know who was wearing them, especially since they were such nice, sox, she mused. Then' she smiled, w rote her name and address hurriedly on a slip of paper, tucking it into the toe of one of the socks, and tied up the pack age. Thus Works Daniel Cupid. On next Wednesday, Miss Smeall will leave for Philadelphia with her mother, Mrs. P. A. Smeall. A week or two later she will become Mrs. Arthur J. Henry, jr., of Philadelphia. It was Arthur J. Henry, jr., who teceived the "nice" pair of sox knit by Miss Smeall three years ago. When he found the tiny note in the toe of one of the sox, he decided that the girl must be just as nice as the "nice" sox she had knitso he wrote her. Believing it the duty of "slay-at-homes" to keep up the soldier's spirits, Mis Smeall replied. Thus began a long correspond ence which culminated when Miss Smeall made a hasty trip to Camp A vers, Mass., where Mr. Henry was stationed with the 25th engineers. . A week after her arrival Mr. Hen ry left for Fiance, but during that 1 pmwtto?- & bought a ring, promised to be true and sailed for France, He returned to America last Sep tember, spent half a day with his parents in Philadelphia and boarded the fastest train for Omaha. He spent two weeks here, then returned to Philadelphia, for young engineers must work, even if they are members of aristocratic families in Philadelphia ' But during his stay he and Miss Smeall decide 1 that April was a lovely month for weddings and planned a honeymoon in Panama, among the tropical palms and mos quitoes. Monsignor Hugh Henry, of the Catholic university at Washington, Mr. Henry's cousin, will have charge of the marriage ceremonies at St. Edmonds church in Philadel phia. The event will be one of social importance in the Quaker city, Miss Snuall says. Miss Smeall is a graduate and post graduate of -St. Francis seminary, at Columbus, Neb., in music. She has completed a course' in painting at St. Birchmans and the Sacred Heart academies, and is a member of the St.. Cecilias church choir. "I'm glad I know all these things," she smilled, "but I'm gladder still that I knew how to knit sox. "Arthur still has that 'nice' pair of sox, and insists that I must knit him another pair some time. "I don't ,think woolen sox would be very comfortable in Panama thcugh, do you?" she inquired, smiling- Dolls made of plaited -straw, which are practically indestructible, even it water-soaked, have been invented in Germany.
