PALMER ORDERS
THOROUGH PROBE
OF CORN CORNER
Statement Says Any Attempt,
- Even If Unsuccessful, Basis
for Lever Control Act
Prosecution.
Chirac Tribute-Omaha Be LrnMd Wire.
Chicago, April 9. An order from
Attorney General Palmer to prose
cute everybody 'whom evidence may
show has h. implicated in the al
leged attempt to corner May corn,
now under federal investigation,
was rceived at the federal building
today. It was pointed out that any
attempt to corner a food product,
even if unsuccessful, would form the
basis for prosecution under the
Lever act.
Indictments are to be sought not
only against those who performed
the "overt acts" in the alleged cor
ner that precipitated the $4,000,000
crash of Eugene M. Hoyne and com
pany, but against all those found to
be in league with or behind the few
who actually engineered the deal.
Books and records of the largest
and most prominent grain broker
age concerns are being carted to the
federal building for inspection and
will be submitted to the grand jury.
Especial attention is being centered,
it was said, on the accounts of Her
man J. Blum, secretary of the Gardi
ner Van Ness company and A. W.
Cutten, a wealthy Du Page county
farmer, both of whom are reported
to have had enormous dealings in
corn, oats and wheat since January
1. 1920.
At the offices of Hoyne & Co. it
was said it will take at least two
weeks to complete the audit of the
books and determine what can be
salvaged for creditors.

O'Toole entered the employ of
the Pr'son. about 30 years ago and
in 1900 was assigned to guard duty
in the death house. A year ago he
was relieved of that task. In the
meantime he had been called upon
to prepare scores of condemned
men for their death and accom

Ends Life After Spree on
Bay Rum, Milk and Pickles
Wilmington, Del., ; April 9.
After a spree on bay rum, milk and
pickles, Peter Grant, 46 years old,
a leather worker, was found as
phyxiated in his home. His wife
said she found the window tightly
closed and a rug placed in front of
one of the doors. She said he had
been drinking heavily for several
days.
"He had not been sober since last
Saturday," said Mrs. Grant. "He
began drinking bay rum at that
time and drank three quarts. When
I left him he was rather wild.
"He got up and drank a quirt of
milk and ate a dish of cucumber
pickles I left on the table, and I
think he went to the gas stove to
make himself a cup of coffee. I
don't know whether it was an acci
dent."

Chicago, April 9. Mrs. Belle
Gaertner, beautiful young wife of a
wealthy manufacturer, cannot com
plain that she no longer lacks com
pany in the palatial home. She and
her husband had some words on
this point, with the result that jthere
is now plenty of company of a
kind in the house.
There are eight guests, two sets
of four each, wide, thick, flat-footed
detectives. They have relieved Mrs.
Gaertner of all household duties,
If the telephone rings, four men,
two from each squad, scramble to
answer it. Follows then a wordy
conference and if they deem it
proper, the caller is permitted to
converse with Mrs. Gaertner. If
visitors come they are met at the
door by four detectives and if there
is nothing suspicious about the
callers they are admitted, but all
conversation must take place in the
presence of the eight sleuths.
After their quarrel, Gaertner at
tempted to eject his wife, with
negative results. Then he installed
four detectives to see that she did
not remove any of the furniture or
receive visits from certain pro
scribed persons, in particular, one
Edward Lusk.
Mrs. Gaertner countered by em
ploying four detectives from a rival
agency, and there you are. The
costly Kermanshah rugs bear the
imprint of flat hoofs and the beauti
ful mansion reeks with the smoke of
flor de cabbios. Both sets of de
tectives keep a log of the day's pro
ceedings. Two men are always with
Mrs. Gaertner, one 'front each side.
If she goes to a picture show, they
accompany her, join her in auto
rides through the park and camp
outside her door when she retires.
She can no longer complain there is
no company in the house.
Procrastination Is
Thief of Ask Tom,
He Knows About It
Tom Dennison has come to the
conclusion that an insurance solici
tor is not the worst pest in the
world.
Tom's home was entered by bur-
lars last Sunday who carried away
1,500 worth of furs, clothes and
silverware.
Saturday he was stopped on the
street by Ed Creighton, an insurance
solicitor, who wanted to write up
a burglar insurance policy.
"All right I'll take a policy," Tom
said.
"Come right up to the office and
will fix it up right now," Creigh
imm insisted.
"Vo, I think I better wait until
res can come out to the house and
SaJtt an inventory first," Tom r
pued.
But the thieves beat Creighton
to it.
Says Women Are Climbing
Down to Level of Men
London, April 9.- "Women are
climbing down to the level of men,"
Mr. Grant Ramsey declared in a
lecture before the Institute of Hy
giene. "I find more of this tendency in
the woman's movement than eman
cipation. "Where women are up against the
laws of nature, nature is bound to
win.
"The primary duty is maternity,
and if this is evaded there is an end
of all things.
"The world has never been so in
sane at it is today.
"Youns men and Impressionable
women are most affected, but all I
have come under the influence and
