Dublin. April 9. Ireland is look
ing for American intervention m
tavor ot Irish treeoom. mis dec
laration was made by Arthur Grif
fith, "acting president of the Irish
republic." He says it is coming, not
immediately, but soon, but refuses
to specify the date more particularly.
Meantime his .policy is no compro
mise of his demand for the fullest
possible independence.
Mr. Griffith, like other Sinn Fein
members of parliament and officials,
is "on the run." I have had three
appointments . in three days and
each was called off at the last mo
ment because the address lie had
been staving at had become danger
ous. I found him today in a bcauti-
tul Dublin house.
Dismisses Home Rule Bill.
Mr. Griffith dismissed the home
rule bill in a few scornful sentences.
"The bill keeps policemen, tax
gatherers, and postmen under Eng
lish control. It prohibits Irish trade
development. Dublin castle remains
the power, and the Irish parliament
a mere debating society. Our posi
tion is clears They talked of con
stitutional action. We adopted it,
elected representatives by four to 4,
and took a stand on self-determination.
England's answer is the jail
for our elected representatives. Now
we are at war. The police barracks
are armed blockhouses for the in
vading force; their destruction is an
act of war, and I would like to see
how they will collect the tax for
compensating the owners. .
America Must Intervene.
"America must intervene. When
England was defeated and going
down, President Wilson came in and
saved her, laying down certain prin
ciples which it nas not lived up to.
America" must enforce the bargain
implied in these principles as ap
plied to Ireland. All the people of
the world would back America in
insisting on these principles for
which Ireland is the only test left
in Europe. The only alternative i.
extirpation of the Irish people, and
that, we are convinced, the world
won't stand for. I expect Irish inde
pendence within the life time of the
young men now living, as a result
of American intervention.
"We cannot compromise our de
mand for independence, cannot even
discuss it It England withdraws
from Ireland, acknowledging our in
dependence, then we will meet her
and discuss anything as we would
meet any free nation, but we will
discuss only with equals."
French Soldier Kills
Woman Who Nursed Him
Bordeaux, April 9. Crime, ram
pant in France since the war, has
afforded an instance of peculiar tur
pitude in the case of Maurice Ducol
fet, a former soldier. On March 12, at
Abbeville, he murdered a woman
who as a Red Cross nurse had cared
for him when wounded. The victim
was Madame Bonjonnier, wife of
the head of the bar in Abbeville.
She was killed by Ducollet and then
robbed.
Ducollet lias just been arrested.
His home at Talence, a suburb of
Bordeaux, was searched and jewels
which belonged to Madame Bon
jonnier were found there.
