Omaha.
The "outlawed" railway stfke of
30,000 workers, affecting 25 railroads
in the Chicago twitching district, al
ready is increasing the price of meat
to Omaha consumers and if it con
" tinues will advance quotations very
materially, dealers said today.
The strike also is held partly re
sponsible for the "unheard .of" price
of Irish potatoes, selling on the
market at $5 a bushtl with seed po
tatoes at $6.
Meats today were substantially
higher for many cuts. Thay are
affected by the strike through the
reduced supply, merchants said.
Omaha meats in the emergency are
being shipped to Chicago.
Standard vegetables showed no
vnusual increase and in many lines,
such at leaf lettuce, there were ma
terial reductions. Fruits continued
telling at high prices.
Leaf lettuce was quoted at 5 cents
a bunch. Previously it was 10
cents. Good head lettuce was re
tailing at 10, IS and 20 cents, ac
, cording to quality. Asparagus is
selling at 15 and 20 cents, lower by
5 and 10 cents a pound than
formerly.
Cauliflower is up to 20 cents over
a former nrire of 15 cents. Old and
green onions are retailing at 10 cents, j
Excellent baskets of tomatoes can
be bought for 15 cents in some in- j

and are selling- at 7yi to 10 cents a
pound.
- Fine fruits and even the cheaper
grades continue to sell at high prices,
the best oranges retailing at 75 and
80 cents a dozen and the cheaper
ones at 50 to 60 cents. Apples are
somewhat scarce and high.
Biological Professor
Of Creighton Has New
Job On His Hands
Why doet an alligator "alligate?"
Don't know yet; .but Professor
Schafer of the biology department
at ireighton university has lately
received a present of two fine speci
mens which he has forthwith ex
empted from the dissecting table for
the purpose of making a detailed
study of these animals. Indeed, he
knows a great deal about 'em al
ready. To give this a scientic twang it
may be said that the professor has
already identified his saurian pets,
or alligatorids, as he prefers to call
them, as a species of the genus al
ligator of the family alligatoridae of
the order crocodilia. The sugges
tion of starting an alligator farm
was not altogether unheeded by the
professor. In fact Professor
Schafer is quite a connoisseur of
such specimens of animals as are
used for dissecting in the biological
laboratory. He has a regular
menagerie at the college consisting
of rabbits, pigeons, snakes, lizards
and the like.
He claims that he is able to save
from $300 to $400 each year by raid
ing his own specimens. But the al
ligators are an entirely new addition
to his unique collection.
Bucolic Atmosphere
Of Nebraska Town Is
No Lure to This Lad
Ray Sarr of Lexington, Neb., is
no longer impressed with the merits
of that thriving town. '
A quiet, bucolic atmosphere
bores him dreadfully and he craves
to sign up as recruit in the coast
artillery so he can go away to Cal
ifornia, where the climate is said to
be wonderful, and everything.
He declares he hates to stay in
Lexington, and even grows so des
perate as to offer a bribe of $20 to
Sergt. H. B. Marks of the Omaha
recruiting station. His letter to
Sergeant Marks follows:
Dear Sir: I won't b down to volunteer
a tain until next tall; my dad needs me
at horn till tben, but I will be down next
fall, and lay, Marks, I want to enlist In
the coast artillery and go to California,
and if I am underweight if I give you $20
(twenty dollars) wtll you let me ko and
see bow I like the army life. I will give
you $20 (twenty dollars) just to let me In
the army once to see how it Is. I will be
very (lad to do that for I need an educa

army last winter, being sent to Oma
ha from Grand Island. Here it was
discovered he was eight pounds un
derweight and he was rejected. He
went to his farm home saying he
was going to make up the weight

the opinion of Cardinal O'Connell.
Man is the head of the house, he
told a meeting of men in the cathe
dral of the Holy Crost recently, and
should assert his proper authority.
Cardinal O'Connell said he did
not understand how a father "could
look on and see his children, espe
cially the girls, running rampant
without any consideration for mod
esty." He criticized the evil of ex
travagance in expenditures and
predicted a financial reaction in this
country tomewhat 1 similar to that
which hat caused Europe's virtual
