The break came after turmoil in
which Police Chief Beavers took a
hand on complaints of officials in
the state capitol where the meeting
was held. One of the factions,
headed by Roscoe Pickett, state;
chairman, elected four delegates at
large, instructed for Major General
Leonard Wood.
The other, headed by Henry LiiT
coin Johnson, negro, formerly col
lector of internal revenue here, and
C. F. Gorce, a lawyer, of Atlanta,
elected uninstructed delegates.
The meeting was called for noon' -in
the house of representatives but
two hours before that time the
Tickett element arrived and pro
ceeded to business behind locked ,
doors. Arriving to find themselves
barred from the convention, the
Johnson-Goree faction, pounded the
doors, creating sucli excitement that
the police were called. Governor
Dorsey decided that the hall should f
be opened to all. i "'
Shouting and singing tbejJolin
son-Goree faction marched mo the
hall and proceeded to take charge.
Johnson, himself mounted the plat
form, called the meeting to order
and tried to make a speech against
factionalism, " but-' was almost
drowned out by a chorus of shouts.
Finally the two factions held sep
arate meetings in the same hall and
elected their separate delegates.
Pickett was chosen as nationala
committeeman and Greer state
chairman by the Pickett followers,
while Johnson was selected by his
element as national committeeman
with Goree as state chairman. These
Officers ajso are expected to be de
cided finally by recognition at the
Chicago convention.

In House Favors Plan
To Use Road Machinery

Washington.- April 8. (Special
Telegram.) The house military af
fairs committee ordered that a favor
able report be made on the bill of
Representative Reavis authorizing
the secretary of war to transfer road
making material to the Department
of Agriculture for the use of state
highway committees.
The report involved in the bill in-
eludes 500 10-ton caterpillar tractors
complete with spare parts, 200 mo-"
bile machine shop units, shop ma
chinery and machine tools and equip
ment suitable for repair and re
building motor-propelled vehicles.
The bill further provides that "any
state legislature using said property
shall pay to the Department of Agri
culture 20 per cent of the estimated
value as fixed by the secretary of
agriculture, against which the state
may set off all freight charges paid
not to exceed 20 per cent."
The necessity for the legislation
rose out of a ruling of the comptrol
ler who held that legislations of
this character was without any law.

New York,' April 8. Twenty-five
hundred" counterfeit 10 dollar bills
were brought from Montreal by
Omar Barselou and 'Paul Theorret
to be passed in New York, secret
service men said today in annuncing
the arrest and alleged confession
of the men. The bills were counter
feit federal reserve bank notes.
Captain John S. Tucker of the ..
secret service said that the pair had
passed 10 of the bills. Plans were
made for raiding the headquarters
of the counterfeiters - in Montreal
as a result of ,. information given
by the men.

as "merely a left-handed way by
which the bosses get at the situa
tion." "It is designed," he said, "to pre
vent, rather than permit, of the vot
ers' choice for president. The law
was engineered by the machine or
ganization which hoped by passing
a law of that sort to prevent the
adoption of a real primary system."
