The river drooped two feet last night.- , v Financial OjUigj Irlbuiio-'-inaha Bee Leased Wire. New York, April 7. The advance of industrial stocks which gained headway on Tuesday . under , the stimulating influence o f6 per cent call money, acquired additional power today, as stock dividends acted to spur the speculative imagi nation. The Studebaker corporation's large distribution of surplus in the form of new shares came ss an unr expected development and the 100 per cent dividend in shares declared during the flay by the International Motor pompany urged trading in many stocks whose surplus ac counts were swollen by business during the war years. Call Loans Slow. Again call loans were put through at ( per cent ana t no amount or offerings was In excess of the demand. Stocks In par ticular favor with the trading ended the day with net gains, running from 2 to 24 points. There was considerable profit-taking in - tho last half hour, especially in steel and allied Issues, whose rise the day before had been extensive. The railroad group failed to continue Tuesday's Im provement. A market, based on stock dividend actualities and expectations is not the soundest In the world. The test of stock Increase is the amount of dividend hold ers will receive after their certificates of ownership have I been expanded. Still, traders have ever been aroused by divi dends in stock and the short Interest In an issue enhanced in amount through spe cial directors' action Is moved to cover their contracts In hasty fashion. Evidence of hurried purchase for this purpose was clear In particular stocks to day and worked to impart a decidedly strong tone to prices In the fore part of the session. Concerted Buying-. The market contained a strong demon stration of concerted buying in several stock Issues whose totals of outstanding shares are either small or not' widely dis tributed. Tho sharp rise of Stromberg Carburetor. Vanadium Corporation Re plogle Steel and one or two others, all connected in popular estimation with the financial group Interested In the un fortunate Stuts Motor episode, was viewed with less satisfaction In conservative stock exchange quarters than might have beeu expected in a day when the general price trend was upward. In the cotton market a vigorous ad vance emphasized the. unfavorable weather which parts of the crop belt have been experiencing. Probably low call money also had its effect In speculation In the staple, for it was noted in market gos sip that the impression that day to day credit is to be plentiful lor a time was an absorbing factor. Approximately $9,000,000 more British gold was made available by. the arrival of another consignment from London, making approximately $41,000,000 to arrive en the current movement. Sterling Exchange Down. Sterling exchange declined 2c from th day'a maximum quotation, but regained half of the recession before business closed. French rates reacted and there was considerable weakness In Italian Quota tions, arousing afresh the thought that these countries were meeting substantial otligations at London, despite the adverse exchanges, steel trade comment deals this week with the sizable float of products to foreign consumers. , In connection with' surveys of the Iron and steel Industry, it is worth noting that pig Iron production during March was the largest since December, 1918, the Iron Trade Review setting the total at 3,376, 654 tons. In Pioneer Certificates Of Company. ' Lincoln. Neb.. April 7. (Special.) Royal Highlanders replying to a suit in district court here to enjoin h 5ti!tmfnt of hiclirr rates, al leges that its bylaws were regularly . , i i i adopted ana mai iney wont no nara ship on any member. The court is informed that one of the plaintiffs, V. M. Widener, holds what is known in the society as a pioneer certificate, of which there were outstanding at the tifne of tin adoption of the new rates, 1,783. ' The value of the benefits called' for by these certificates computed on the basis of the National Frater nal congress' table of mortality was, on December 19, 1919, $2,664,962, while the present value' of all future payments called for by the certi ficates deducting nothing for ex penses, amounted to $169,625, which was less than 7 per cent of the ben efits called for by pioneer certi ficates. 1 " Payments of these certificates alone would require $2,495,337, which, i of necessity must have been col lected from other members of the society. It is further alleged by the de fendants that the insufficiency Of the' old rates is the sole cause of the deficiency existing, and tht old members have not paid sufficient to cover even the net cost of insurance carried by them to base the adop tion of a new rate without making provision for paying subsequent benefits on any certificate..
