BAKERS EXPECT
TO BATTLE) CLUB
WOMEN ON BREAD
Ordinance to Standardize
Weight Before Council
Monday Hot Arguments
Predicted.
Omaha club women and the bak
ers of the city are scheduled for a
' battle Monday morning when the
ordinance recently introduced by
Commissioner TowJ providing for
a standard loaf of bread, is brought
ud in the city council.
Mrs. C. L. Hempel, president;
Mrs. R. L. r-rantz and Mrs. Mniley
of the home economics department
of the Omaha Woman's club will
be present at the meeting to boost
the passage ot the ordinance to
gether with a committee of the
Central Labor Union, composed of
A. C, Smeed and George Kleefner.
Mayor Smith recently expressed
himself as favoring such an or
dinance. . ....... '
Would Guarantee Weight.
The measure as drawn up does
not attempt to fix the price " of
bread, but was conceived, it is
pointed out by those who urge its
passage, of guaranteeing the custo
mer the weight in bread for which
he pays. It is looked upon by the
local fair price commissioner, Mrs.
C. G Ryan, as a step toward lower-
ing the nigh cost of living.
The ordinance would compel bak
ers to label loaves according to
their weight and would establish the
15-cent loaf a a standard. It is
contended the .'consumer is entitled
to 24 ounces for IS cents, where he
has been getting all the way from
17 to 24 ounces. The larger bak
eries, it is declared, are the worst
offenders in selling the short weight
loaf.
' Use Cheaper Flour.
- ' J. P. Christenseti of, the Peterson
& Pagan Co., which manufactures
50,000 loaves' of bread daily, declares
the passage of the ordinance will be
a severe handicap to model bakeries
and would necessitate making use of
cheaper flour. The average loaT of
bread sold in Omaha for 15 cents,
weighs 20 ounces
."It costs the larger bakeries as
much to turn out a loaf of bread at
18 ounces as it costs the smaller
shops to furnish one of 21 ounces,"
- said Mr. Christcnsen. ' The larger
bakeries go to larger expense to
give quality to their customers and
guarantee sanitary conditions. The
smaller shops go to less trouble and
can give- more weight to each loaf,
but what their customers gain in
quantity they lose in quality."

WHY?
Do we close our eyes when we
sleep?
(Copyright, 1S20, by Wheeler Syndi
cate, Inc.)
. We cannot sleep with our eyes
open because to be asleep in
volves losing control of most of
the functions of the body. When
our body-sleeps, our brain sleeps
also providing we are sleeping
soundly and completely. A part
of the brain has the power to
open our eyes to lift the eye
lids and it is only by the action
of this part of the brain, either
consciously or unconsciously,
that our eyes remain open. When
we stop exercising its power, our
eyes shut.
The action is similar to that
which occurs when 1 an electric
power plant cuts off the power
and the light go out. We vir
tually turn off the power that
keeps our eyes open and they
shut. There is no connection be
tween this action and the fact
that we sleep lying down. This
is done merely because the body
demands complete rest, and re
laxation' in order to secure the
benefits of a sound sleep, and
complete relaxation is possible
only when we are freed of the
necessity of supporting any part
of the body.

Why Bejkinny?
It's Easy to Be Plump,
Popular and Attractive
:
It's msy to be plump, popular and at
tractive instead of being thin, angular and
scrawny. Almost invariably the trouble
is due to weak nerves and consequent fail

heartily,. but, owing to the lack of nervous

get the benefit from the food you eat. All
of this can be remedied very quickly by
taking with each meal a five-grain tablet
of Blood-Iron Phosphate. This quickly
strengthens the nervous system, enriches
the blood and increases Its oxygen-carrying
power, and in a remarkably short time the

also begins to look and feel better. Sleep,
appetite, strength and endurance are im
