Omaha Grain
Chicago Tribune-Omaha Bee Leased Wire,
New York, March 29. Trading in
stocks was Rtiided mainly by the
course of call money rates today
resulting in an all-around decline
near the close of the session. A firm
state of the money market was in
dicated by the opening rate of 8 per
cent for demand loans. It was not
difficult for speculators to see in this
figure when taken against the back
ground of the week-end statement
of the federal reserve system a ris
ing tendency and the action of
shares in the afternoon reflected
activity among sellers for the short
account as soon as the money quo
tation began to stiffen. It advanced
to 12 per cent before the day's bor
rowing had been completed.
Presumably, the breakdown of tele
graph service to Interior cities because
of severe storms had something to do
with the mvement of stocks, leaving busi
ness largely In the hands of local pro
fessional traders. The turnover was re
duced by the lack of outside participa
tion and tha market following paid at
tention to reports of heavy damage to
property In tha path of Sunday s tor
nadoes. In cotton trading, news of tha storms
and flnods had Influence In movlnf quota
tions higher, as the statistical position
f tha staple, coupled with continued ex
ports on a large scale, has mads the
market sensitive to events likely to cur
tall spring planting.
In the light of too physical and credit
factors affecting the day's )ealings In
stocks It whs not posslbls to draw deduc
tions from the market's developments. At
times there was a sharp upbldding of
mntnr, steel snd petroleum shares, evi
dently efforts continued from last week's
endeavor. A survey of dealings In the
last half hour so plainly denoted bearish
operations to undermine the sdvance that
underlying conditions of Industry of a
sort to mould prices were practically sub
merged. Current comment of commission houses
and banking circles shows, however, that,
for some time to come ft tight credit
situation is likely to have more of a
bearing upon stocks than reaults In fields
of production.
The action of the exchanges Indicated
large prnflt-taklng sales, a development
not surprising In view of last week's
advance. Sterling st the closing rats
ot $3 89 for checks was bc below Satur
day's final figures. Franca receded 22
points while Italian rates lost more
ground, the movement of these rates being
an extension of last week's decline.

Chicago Tribune-Omaha Bee Leased Wire.
Chicago, March 29. Crippled wire
service curtailed business in grains
and the receipt and distribution of
news. Grain prices advanced early
on local buying and receded qji
profit-taking and bear pressure.
March corn was congested snd closed
IS" hither, while May and July finished
unchanked and September ?8c lower, oats
lost .c to c and while rye was Ho
to Ce higher.
Provision trading was affected by the
labor troubles at the stock yards and
packing houses and closed at nearly che
lows st of the day with pork off 65c to
Tie, lard 30o to 37 He and ehortrlbs 20o to
22Hc.
Corn traders were Inclined to go slow
on both aides of the market, pending
resumption of wire service with the coun
try. Sentlmont was mtX'. d and what few
rnlers drifted In from the outride were
mainly on the buying side. There was
nothing in the news to csuse any un
easiness on the part of longs or shorts,
and prices moved slowly within a range of
lt,c, closing sbout the same as on Satur
day with the exception of March.
A little short cuvertng advanced the
latter to 31.621, at the lust or within Ho
of the best figure on the crop.
Exporters bid $3.77 for No. 3 hard

closing 1c lower, while Chicago was off
