Highjackers were active in Oma a again Monday night Raids were . made on the homes of E. E. Howell, 4018 Izard street, and H. Pollack, 4301 Dodge street. Chief of Police : Eberstein had his first close encoun ter with this brand of criminals dur ing the melee. . When highjackers visited the home of Hr, Ifowcll they took all f the s.tock- of 15 gallons of whisky which Mr. Howell had been saving for emergency. . Mr. Howell, as member of ' the state legislature from this county, , voted for prohibition at the time the legislature enacted the statewide prohibitory act. He is also a mem ber of the local Bryan, campaign committee which is now espousing the "dry" cause as against the 'wetS." . , ' ' Son Discovers Loss. The slumber of the Hbwells was not disturbed Monday night by the intruders, who forced a storm win down and two doors to gain en trance to the precious stock. They also cut the telephone wires. The loss was not discovered until Mr. Howell's son went to the base ment this morning to tend the furnace. The police were notified, . Then when you gaged in battle with a fleeing gang of four or five men. The men escaped in a Cadillac automobile which they had left waiting for them at Forty-second and Douglas streets. ( No Loot Secured. The chief appeared just a moment too late to actively enter into the battle. Officer Mortensen told his chief that he had noticed the car standing empty, and as he entered the alley in the rear of the Pollack home to investigate, he flashed his pocket light and surprised a gang of men emerging from the back yard, . The men fired at him. the officer Said, and he dodged behind a tele phone pole, returning their shots. Noj-one was wounded. The men scattered, but made their automo bile before either Mortensen or the chief, could overtake them. No liquor was secured by the highjackers. Proposal to Narrow Tenth Street Viaduct Is Opposed In Council A resolution offered to the city council Tuesday by Commissioner Towle proposing , that the city engineer approve plans for narrow ing the Tenth street viaduct from 59 to 44 feet between the depots, aroused considerable opposition and resulted in referring the resolution tq the committee ol the whole for deliberate consideration. The Union Pacific and Burlington railroad companies propose to build a new superstructure of re inforced concrete and to maintain the walks at the present width of pine feet and three inches. The first opposition to the reso lution was that it delegated too much power to the city engineer. Mayor Smith and Commissioners Falcpner, Ure and Butler were outspoken in their opposition to any reduction of the width of this viaduct. Mr. Towl explained the proposed reduction of width would be be tween depots only and he added that there would be no buildings on the west side of the viaduct along the line of. the proposed narrowing. Doctor Finds Office Open, Lights On, Suitcases Gone Dr. W. L. Roth, 736 City National Bank building, left his1 office for one hour early Monday , night, during which time, burglars used a pass key on the door and ransacked the room. The doctor returned at 8:30 and dis covered the front door standing open, electric lights burning, and two suitcases stolen, both contain ing silk goods and jewelry belonging to his wife. It sounded more like a war-whoop than anything he had heard since coming into the country of the white man. You see the apfendment is up in this state now." "The amendment?". "Yes, an amendment to the na tional constitution allowing women to vote. The way it is now the men do all the voting. For a long time, only men with a certain amount ot property could vote.- People thought, you see, that the persons who paid the taxes should do the. voting. In soipe places also- only tho"se men who could 1 read and write could vote. In a number of states even now a man must have a certain amount of education , 'in order to vote. ."Little by little, though, the prop erty qualifications for voting, as they called them, were done away with and every man over 21 years of age was allowed to vote.
