, N Attention to Details. 1
"Before the war the United States
had the best system of transpbrta
tioji in the world. This condition
should be restored. Objectionable
features of private ownership, such
as the one-time aloofness of rail
officials toward the public, have
been removed. Railroad men of to-
dav do not hold their positions
tlitough favoritism, but bji virtue of
their ability.
"I believe the public likes the idea
of competition. It likes individual
ism, and the personal toucn, ana at--tpntinn
todetails, which were lost
through government control. It will
be the business of the Union Pacific
and other railroads to bring this at
tention to details back to its-proper
olace."- , . . , - .. ,
Mr. Gray, Murine his talk, de
clared that railroad credit would be
poor until investors were satisfied
that the railroads are again on their
teet and are to -be given-sympathetic
treatment by tile government. Rail
road men generally are glad that
congressional legislation has put so
much power in the hands of the In

asserted that since 1916 the-added
tost- of onerating the railroads .has
been $1,700,000,000, as compased to
an increase in rate returns of $1,250,
000,000 during the same period.
Transportation charges today are
relatively cheaper than a any other
time in the history of the world, he
declared. : !,
In closing, Mr. Gray called atten
tion, to' the fact that for the first
time, all dep.artmenti.of the JJnion
Pacific.are operating in Ontaha.
Omaha may really boast of having
home railroad, and the officers of
the Union Pacihc want to help in
developing Omaha and Nebraska
