HEALTH EXPERT
TELLS OMAIIANS
HOW TO BE WELL
Dr. Barker Guest of Rotary
Club at 'Luncheon Satur
dayTo Make Other
Speeches This Week.
"Keep your bodily defenses in
Rood condition," is the message Dr,
Charles E: Barker brings to Oma
hans. This eminent apostle of health and
happiness h here under the auspices
of the Omaha Rotary club. He ad
dressed Rotarians yesterday noon at
Hotel Fontenelle, ministers . being
the particular guests of the occa
sion. 11c will speak tonight in Firs:
Congregational church on "The Fin
est of the Fine Arts, or How to Be
Always Happy."
He Is scheduled for the following
series oftalks next Wednesday: 11
a. m. South High school auditorium;
1 p. m., High School of Commerce,
3' p. tn., to women in the bait room
of Hotel Fontenelle; 6:30, RotaHan
dinner in Masonic temple. The aft
ernoon subject will be "The Respon
sibility of a Mother to Her Daugh
ters;" in the evening, "The Respon
. sibility of a Father to His Sons."
Dr. Barker is the man who served
as physical adviser for four years
during W. H. Taft's occupancy of
the White House' He is SO year
old, according to the ordinary meth
od of reckoning time, but he assert
that he" feels younger than he did
.m 20 years- ago,
v . "Just Horse Sense.".
"It is just horse sense that I am
bringing to yon," he told the Rotar
ians and ministers yesterday noon.
"Your health is in your own hands
and I say tins with all reverence.
U'he best scientific men of today
state there is no reason known .o
science why . ainan . who observes
the laws of hygiene, should not live
to be 80, 90 or 100 years of age anrt
not have one day of sickness.
"Get - into the habit of being
cheerful every day, so that it will
be the habit of your life. Anyone
can acquire this habit of being
cheerful, under all circumstances, by
the exercise of will power, no mat
ter how many ancestors may have
been grou;hes. Good cheer -has a
tremendous effect upon your body.
Worry and bad temper create a poi
son in your system.
"If you-live long and well, you
must get into the habit of taking a
certain amount qi systematic ;
moderate., -exercise every day. ;'He
who will do this will be practically
immune from disease. and will live
long,, barring accidents." . , '
Demonstrates Exercises.
Dr. Barker told of a certain man
who was anxious1 to make money
that his family might be well pro-
vided for. "He made money and
neglected his health. He died at the
age of 55, justvvhen he had ac
quired a -'Competency, and another
nian,who had conserved his health,
came along and. married the widow,
and the wealth. -
He asserted, speaking particularly
to the ministers present, that many
poor sermons may be attributed to
the rundown condition of preachers
who couM rehabilitate themselves
by following the daily exercise
habit.
Dr. Barker gave demonstrations
of his 12 exercises, which he recom
mended should be observed every
morning, taking about 12 minutes
for the series. Charts, showing
these exercises,- will be distributed
to Rotarians and others this week-.
' Kjotarians will help others to under
stand the Barker method of. daily
, exercises. ' After he had . given his
demonstrations yesterday at the
Fontenelle, Dr. Barker said:
"If you love your wife and want
her to live 100 years with you, you
will explain these exercises to her
when you go home."
