When "Fifi" learned Carter Leidy had not been asked to attend the momentous fu-.ction the elopement was decided upon, and took place upon the morning of the day an nounced for the debut. The match is the result of an ac quaintance that dates back to schooldays, when Miss Widener at tended Miss Irwin's school in Phil adelphia. At the time of the mar riage Carter Leidy was a freshman in the University of Pennsylvania. During the war he was in the stu dent training corps at Princeton. Another case of defying parental opposition is that of Lt. Laurens Morgan Hamilton, who married Mrs. Gregory Warren on Janu ary 26. Young Hamilton, now in his 20th year, is a grandson of the late J. P. Morgan and a son of Mr. and Mrs. William Pierson Hamilton. Young Hamilton was anvaide to Brigadier General Edwards, of the. Depart ment of. the Northeast, in Boston, but took a long leave of absence from his duties there. With his bride he is now on a honeymoon in California. "I have nothing to regret." he said, before leaving. "My marriage, is purely democratic. This marry ing into royal circles and having the flavor of royalty hanging around marriage doesn't suit me. As soon as I get my discharge I will go out to California and raise fruit. I w;'l prove my army training has served me a good turn." About three weeks before the Hamilton elopement Miss Miriam Virginia Hostetter of Pittsburgh, one ofthe heiresses to the vast Hostetter fortune, eloped with Mal colm R. Smith, of New Haven. It was a surprise generally to society, but it is said that Miss Hostetter confided to her girl friends that she was "in love with Malcolm, and you may look for an elopement one of these days." The marriage took place in Toledo. ' Mrs. Smith, who is noted for her beauty, is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert D. Hostetter, both of whom arc said to have opposed the courtship of their daughter to young Smith, whom she net while attend ing a girls' school in a suburb of New Haven. She is just 18. Smith, it was !:: cd, was i ..red at tutoring school in Milford prepar ing for Yale. He is the son of Harry A. Smith, president of the National Fire Insurance company of Hartford. Earlier in the social season Phila delphia society was surprised to learn that a young couple much feted on account of their engage ment, Rosamond Lancaster and Barclay W?arburton, jr., were al ready married. Miss Lancaster is the daughter of Mrs. John Edward Lancaster of Worcester, Mass., and New York, and vas for some time a guest of Miss Mary Brown War burton, Barclay's sister. Barclay Warburton is a grandson of John Wanamaker. Miss Lancaster attended a charity ball on December 12 and posed in a pageant that was one of the season's events. The next evening she and her fiance attended a dinner and dance at the Ritz-Carlton given by Major and Mrs. Barclay Warburton, the parents of her fiance. Later it was found that at that time the young couple had been married three days. The wedding had taken place in Elkton, Md. Lieutenant Warbourton enlisted in the signal corps at the beginning of the war and was with the army of occupation and a relief commis sion. Miss Lancaster was active in war work in New York, Philadelphia and Worcr.-Aer. Mr. and Mrs. War burton suddenly left for Europe be fore the holidays. After some years of agitation the University of Georgia has open ed all of its departments to women students. , New Way to Wave the Hair Becomes Popular J That most women are quick to appro eiutn anything that will enhance their aU tractiveness, is nhown by the greatly in creased demand for liquid sllmerine, sine its remarkable hair curling properties be (tune known. Druggists everywhere re port large sales for this product. I Women are enthusiastic over liquid all merine particularly because it enablei them to acquire a curlineas which is s beautifully natural in appearance, and not have to burn the life out of the hair with n hot iron. Also they find it a beneficial dressing for the hair. The liquid ia so avrreeabJe to uxe, being neither gummy nor greasy, and it is so easy to apply with a rlean tooth brush at night when tha hair is down. The pretty wavy and curly effect in the morning is most delightful. As it takes only a little silmerine to pro duce the required effect, a few ounces will last for weeks. niMiiiiiiiiiiiiMiiiiniiiliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiMiiiiiiiiii:iiiiiiii!iiiiii!iiii!iiiiiiiiiiin ORCHARD & WILHELM CO. ia'a'imB::s'a.'a'is 'S"a'is:'a.riB:s"i' aai'aiiiMiniMB.iai.ianaiiairaiiiiitiiaiiaiiijiaiieiiaiiaji Cupid Is a Wily God And Brooks No Interference. By MARGERY REX. Written for International News Service. New York, Feb. 21. Are the numerous elopements, both in so ciety and out of it, a sign of the times, another evidence of the spirit of daring engendered in our young men by the war? Elopements of old were considered rather shocking affairs to happen to one's family. The conventional thing was a musical-beflowere'd-satin-and-yeil wedding, with all relatives called in to take a last look at the bride; numerous conveyances awaiting, decked out in ribbons and old shoes. Today the process is simplified. The martial spirit has affected af fairs marital.
