Lincoln, Feb. 16. (Special.) The motion by attorneys of Allen Gram mer, convicted of the1 murder of Mrs. Lulu Vogt, his mother-in-law, in Howard county, for a new trial has been denied by the district. court f that courtfy, according to infor mation received at the office of the attorny general. They applied1 to the court, charg ing errors, the same charges as have followed the case through the whole proceedings in attempts to save Grammer and his friend Anson V. Cole, convicted with him of the same crime, from the electric chair. In connection with the matter, un der instructions of the attorney gen eral, Warden Fenton has notified Executioner Hurlburt in New York that his services wili not be needed next Friday and to wait further in structions. Girls' Industrial School Head Married to Iowa Man Lincoln, Feb. 16. (Special.) Miss Clara G. Quinby, superintend ent of the Girls' Industrial school at Geneva, visited the board of con trol Monday and announced that she would resign her position shortly as she was now married to Forest S. Treat, secretary of the Iowa board of control. She first met her husband three years ago while em ployed In the Iowa girls' reforma tory. Release Omaha Man for Trial by U. S. Authorities Lincoln, Neb., Feb. 16. (Special.) Emit Rookstool,. sentenced from Douglas county for robbery, was re leased from the penitentiary to a federal officer, who will take him to Great Lakes, where he is wanted by the military authorities for de sertion. He was received at the Ne braska institution August 29, 1917, for an indeterminate sentence of three to 15 years. , Judge Seeks Reelection. Lincoln. Neb.. Feb. 16. (Special.) Judge Guy T. Graves of Pender has filed for renomination to tne district court of the Twelfth ju dicial district. even sold out their own business to do so, after realizing the greater possibilities of co-operative effort, and the progress of these men - has, to a great extent, been a matter of their own ability and efforts. Leigh "Potato Exhibit" Cars to ' Start Around State Soon Lincoln, Neb., Feb. 16. (Special.) Circulars are being sent out giv ing the route to be taken by the special potato exhibit car and the dates it will visit the various towns to be visited in Nebraska, Wyoming an Colorado. Car contains exhibits of . potato varieties, grades and grading, dis eases and control methods, storage houses and methods, marketing, cer tified potato seed, cultural methods, etc. special literature has been printed by the agricultural college and the railroads for free distribu tion during this exhibit. All sub jects pertaining to potatoes from seed selection to the most appetiz ing methods of preparing "King Spud" will be covered. Two Proposals Passed by Constitutional Convention Lincoln, Feb. 16. (Special.) The constitutional convention passed two proposals Monday. One places the rights of aliens in prop erty under the jurisdiction of trie legislature and leaves the rights of people of other states in property of this state the same as if they lived in the state. The other authorizes the state board of public funds to place all school lands for sale up at auction instead of under the appraisement plan. A strong tight was put up by Bryant and others to keep the school lands from being sold. New York Man Enters Race for Vice Presidency in Nebraska Lincoln, Neb., Feb. 16. Voters' petitions to place the name of Wil liam Grant Webster of New York on the republican primary prefer ence ballot of April 20 as seeking nomination as a candidate for the vice-presidency were filed with the secretary of state. His platform says he is opposed to the league ot nations and favors Intervention in Mexico if necessary. He was a can didate in the Nebraska primaries in 1916 for the same office. Prison Warden Cleared of Charges by Former Guards Lincoln, Feb. 16. Special.) There has been no misconduct or mismanagement of affairs at the state penitentiary by Warden Fen ton, according to the state board of control Some time ago a-Lincoln newspaper published a communica tion which charged the warden with mismanagement of the affairs of the institution. The men making the charge were former guards and had been released. The warden asked for an investigation of the charges, but when the board met to hear them, neither of the men showed up, nor could they be found. $4,000 Farm Home Burns South of Humboldt, Neb. Table Rock, Neb., Feb. .(Spe cialsThe home of Fred Trimble, a few miles sout hof Humboldt, one of the finest farm homes of that section, recently caught fire and to gether with the contents was en tirely consumed. The house had just recently been built and was valued at over $4,000. The loss was partly covered by1 insurance. Florence Chemist Dies. Florence, Neb., Feb. 16. (Special Telegram.) Andrew Jacobson, city chrmist at the water works, died to day, 41 years old. He leaves a widow, in Florence, and a brother and sister in Washington. Hastings Farmer Is Held to H igher Court ' On Blackmail Charge 1 listings, Neb., Feb. 16. (Special Telegram.) Pleading guilty in jus tice court, Harley Coba. 24 years old, of Glenville, Neb., was today bound over to district court on the charge of attempting to extort $5.0()0 from L. L. Brandt, retired banker, under threat against the lives of both Rrandt and his 8-year-old daughter, Margaret. Brandt received,an anonymous let ter demanding tlu4 lie deposit the money at a certain post on the Oma ha-Lincoln-Denver highway near Hastings. On the advice of the au thorities, -he left a package of blank paper at the post. Soon after the time limit set by the letter, Coba came by in a car, and went to the post. ' He was ar rested by officers who had been con cealed nearby. At first lie protested innocence, but confessed when confronted with evidence discovered by Mayor Still er, who found stationery matching the anonymous note ia Coba's room on a farm which Coba had leased for this year, and envelopes similar to the one he had used, in a Glenville store. Coba is divorced. Influenza Raging In Pawnee County; Report 1 00 Cases at Steinauer Table Rock, Neb., Feb. 16. (Spe cial.) The influenza is still raging in Pawnee county and there have been a number of deaths. There are said to be over 100 cases in the Steinauer vicinity and Burchard has an increasing number of cases. The schools at Liberty have been closed on account of the disease and in many other towns a ban has been established on all public gatherings. In Pawneev City a two weeks' ban on meetings has been declared, but the schools have not been closed. Arrest Grand Island Man After Chase of 300 Miles Grand Island, Neb., Feb. 16. (Special .Telegram.) After a chase that covered more than 300 miles, Clarence Pearson, 25 years old, a Grand Island n.an, was captured in this city and charged with burglar izing the Grand Island Plumbing company last Wednesday. He also is wanted for escaping from a guard while serving a sentence for burg lary. Pearson admitted, police say, that he robbed the R. D. Kingsley shop. He waived preliminary hear ing in county court and was bound over to the district court. Sues Hines Because Train Smashes Up His Automobile Kearney, Neb., Feb. 16. (Spe cial.) Walker D. Hines, federal railway administrator, is named a defendant in a $10,000 damage suit filed in district court here against the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy railroad. Dan Laughlin of this city is the plaintiff. Laughlin and a man named Lemon were crossing the mlway tracks in an auto when their machine was struck by a freight train, the Kearneyite being badly in jured. He walked to Pleasanton, stole a horse from John Musil and made his way to Loup City. There he deserted the horse and made his way to St. Paul and then bv freight to Ord. Three Plead Guilty to Violating U. S. Liquor Law Grand Island, Neb., Feb. 16. (.Special Telegram.) In the federal court here Harm Shank of Silver Creek pleaded guilty to the charge of illegal transportation of liquor. No sentence has yet been imposed. Harry Langois, local restaurant employee, pleaded guilty to the charge of illegally selling 19 pints of whisky and was sentenced to 90 days in the Hall county jail. Erhie Tuttle of Alliance was sen tenced to 10 days in the county jail on the charge of illegal sale of liquor. Both Tuttle and Langois had been previously fined $100 and costs in police court for the same offense. Licenses at Madison, Madison, Neb., Feb. 16. (Special.) Marriage licenses have been issued to the following persons: Soren Valladsen and Minnie Fichter, both of Newman Grove; John Gil lespie and Elizabeth Carraher of Tilden, Earl E. Manzer and Erna L.
