With tht absence of quantities and varieties of green vegetables ferem f!te south this week, and with Indications that shipments will be larger next week, the high cost of living in Omaha and this section is expected to take a material tumble. - While prices continue about the saline as they were last week, in creased shipments of green stuff will make themselves felt within the next few days on the local market, it is said. Spanish onions are selling for 10 cents a pound and green onions for 6 cents a bunch. Sweet potatoes were quoted at IVi cents a pouqd, head lettuce at 1254 cents' a head, turnips 4 cents a pound, parsnips 4 cents a pound, red onions three pounds' for 25 cents, Irish potatoes 85 cents a peck and winesap apples 40 pounds for $4.50. i ; Henry w, Kotnert is Victim of Pneumonia At His Home In Bluffs Henry W. Rothert, 79 years old, former superintendent of the Iowa School for the Deaf, died yesterday in his apartment in the Shugart flat in Council Bluffs after an illness ot two days from pneumonia. ' Mr. Rolhert was superintendent of the Iowa School for the Deaf for 32 years, retiring from that position last year. He was prominent over the state for his work in developing that school to a standard high "ataiong similar institutions through out the country. He was the. highest ranking Mason at the time of his death, being the ranking past grand master of the Java grand lodge of Masons, and a past grand master of the Knights Templar. He is survived by two sons, Edwin H. -and Waldo H. Rothert, both of Council Bluffs. Funeral services will be held from the Masonic temple fin Council Bluffs Sunday afternoon. Rev. Aged Woman Found j Dead In Home From Gas Asphyxiatiqi Mrs. Mary McKeon, 70 years old, 1909 South Eleventh street, was found dead from accidental gas asphyxiation in the kitchen of her home at 3:30 yesterday morning. The todv was lying face downwards on the floor beside the gas stove. She fad evidently-falljtn from a chair." A iet of the stove was wide open, when Rk T. Walker, 1730 South Tenth treet, whovdiscovered the body, en tered the house. Mrs. McKeon had been dead for approximately 12 hours, undertakers said. The body was found dressed as if prepared for bed. An oil lamp n the kitchen table was still lighted, s! Mrs. McKcpn had been living lone for several years. According to Mrs. Joseph Wolf, who lives downstairs in the same house, Mrs. McKeon visited her Thursday and appeared so happy that she was able to atttend daily services at St. Pat ricks Catholic church in her old age. The church is near by. Edwards," health com missioner, reported that 67 new cases of influenza were, reported to his office Thursday, bringing the to tal for this week to 303. ( "The average daily cases seems to be about thet same for fjiis week," the doctor said. "We are unable to state at this time whether the out break is on the wane, but we be lieve that next week will begin to show a decrease. The percentage of serious cases is small and the death rate thus far is low." Since January 14 there have been eight deaths from influenza and 14 from pneumonia. Hospital accommodations are being taxed to capacity and there are not enough nurses to supply the demand. Fourteen cases of influenza have been reported from the county hos pital. Senator Sorenson Is Seventy, . Just a Boy in Years Now ' "Senator Alfred Sorenson is ob serving his 70th birthday today by going quietly about his affairs, edit ing the Examiner and compiling data for his forthcoming history of Omaha. "Al"' Sorenson is- an Omaha in stitution. He landed here in he days when the earth was young, and after setting type for a short time on The Bee in 1871, became its city editor, reportorial staff and general factotum in 1872. From that day to this he has been a busy man. All his days were not spent with The Bee, for he gave the Republican some of his services, was managing editor of the Herald for a season and then went to Denver, where he toiled on the Rocky Mountain News as a,paragrapher. Portland claimed him, Ind San Francisco, but they could not hold him, and he came back to Omaha in the late '90s, es tablishing his present very prosper ous paper with the beginning of the new century. The total number of Omahans missed by census enumerators has reached 8,879, according to the Chamber of Commerce. School children Thursday reported 792 peo ple missed, girls' in the employ of me cnamoer who are calling every telephone number in theity record ed 373 missed, and 458 names were telephoned to the chamber by em ployers and individuals. In addition to this number Fort Omaha officers say that the 800 of ficers and men at the fort were not counted by census enumerators. John H. Hopkins, director of fed eral census here is uncertain whether soldie;s stationed at this post can be included in-Omaha's population. Army officers, however. declare that soldiers are counted and added tothe population f the place where they are stationed. ' y Cousin of Spanish War Hero Dies Near Council Bluffs William Schley, 86 years old. cousin of Commodore Schley of Santiago fame, died yesterday at his home in Lewis township, Iowa, of senility. Mr. Schley had lived in Lewis township, just outside of Council Bluffs, for 46 years. Fremont Wants Sheriff to Keep All Smallpox at Home The sheriff of Dodge county wants the sheriff of Douglas county to require all smallpox patients of the latter county to remain away from Fremont. y Sheriff Clark yesterday 're ceived a telephone, call from the sheriff at Fremont,' complaining that Nick Schrimer and family, residing in Douglas county, near the Dodge county line, "will not stay away from Fremont."
