Hon The hoc estimates were for
18.000 head, but actual receipts did not
quite come up to these figures. It was
well along in the forenoon before any
trading was done, packers not doing any
buying whatever until after 10:30 o'clock.
Shippers purchased a few hogs around
lOffllBe lower than yesterday, most of the
sales today being from $19.00 3116.25 and
the early top was $15.30, but there was
some possibility of a little nigner ngurc

Sheen A fairly liberal run of" sheen
and lambs arrived for today's trade, but
aged classea were scarce and bulk of the
supply consisted of lambs. Packers
wasted little time In placing bids on the
more attractive orrenngs and trade ruled
fairly active at prices fully steady with
yesterday. Best lambs here brought
so.30 and bulk of the good grades
found an outlet around $2O.0020.25.
Pome well finished heavy ewes brought
71.'. ou. indicating a quotable limit- or
around $12.25. Wethers and yearlings
continue scarce. The feeder trade pre
sented much the same appearance as re
cently and desirable fleshy lambs sold
readily on country account at firm prices.
Half fat lambs suitable for short finish
are quotable up to $19.00 with bulk of
the medium strong weights bringing
$17.60118.50. Good feeding ewea have
been selling around $9.259.50.

Chicago Grain and Provisions.
Chicago. Jan. 27. Firmness developed
In the corn market today after an early
decline. One of the reasons for the rally
was a bullish construction put on tho-
traae review or the federal reserve bank
here. The close was steady, at the same
as yesterday's finish to c higher, with
May I35eci3fi and July 132. In oats
the outcome was virtually unchanged, and
In provisions varied from 25c decline to 20a
advance.
The feature of the federal reserve bank
review which gave satisfaction to bullish
traders in com was a statement that de
mand for commodities outruns any possi
bility of providing a supply. Announce
ment that President Wilson was urging a
$150,000,000 loan to centraf Europe and the
Near East was also regarded as bullish.
On the other hand, selling pressure which
at first dominated the market was due
chiefly to new breaks in forehrn exchanee
and to weakness of rye. As a result of
lacK of roreign demand, rye quotations to
day were 20c a bushel under recent top
figures.
Oats were steadied through buvinr for
houses with seaboard connections.
Provisions averaged lower in sympathy
with foreign exchange. It was said pack
ers were hedging more than at any time
in the past five years.

FINANCIAL
New York, Jan. $7. The noteworthy
feature ef today's listless stock market
was the absolujte indifference manifested
by lt firm to atrong tone to the further
demoralization of the International credit
situation.
roreign exenapges were again In the
throes of unsettlement rates on Lender
and all principal continental points drop
ping to leveia or impairment never be
fore recorded. The extent of the collaDse
may be. gauged from the fact that lt rn
cotnpasfed most of the so-called "neu
tral" countries. Including Scandinavian
center hitherto relatively exempt.
The further crash wss again ascribed
more directly to the policy of credit con.
traction upon which the federal reserve
board recently embarked.
Stocks .that have been most consnlcu.
ous since last Saturday's unexpected rally
were again in me loregrouna, especial
ly steels, equipments, motors and oils. Ex
treme gains in these classes extended
from 2 to 7 points.
Other features of strength Included food
and ehemlcal Issues, metals, shippings
and tobaccos, the latter improving on the
stock dividend declared by United Cigars.
The railway Hat ceased to exist, deal
ing in that quarter being of the small
est proportion.
United States Steel approximated It
highest 'notation of the laat fortnight at
a fractlr ; I gain, but yielded leadership to
a few other similar Issues. The financial
statement of the steel corporation for the
last quarter of 1919 showed a decrease of
almost $4,400,000 In net earnings, did not
appear until after tlje close of the mar
ket. Sales amounted to 700,000 shares.
Bonds tailed to reflect the general
strength of the stock market, Liberty
Issues and Internationals easing variably.
Total sales, par value, aggregated $12,-4-60.000.
Old United States bonds were un
changed on call.

The Cost of Upkeep
A run-down business is like a dilapidated house, the cost of
putting it back on its feet is often greater -than it would be to
start all over again.
To let the telephone run down, in quality of service or in
a mechanical department, would mean far more than a loss to the
telephone company, it would mean a loss to every user of the
telephone.
It has always been the policy of the Telephone Company to'
keep its property in such repair that its subscribers receive the
greatest possible benefit.
But to keep things "ship shape" requires money, more
money today than ever before. Materials cost more and wages
have increased in an attempt to keep pace with the increased
cost of living.
The Telephone Company is working hard to make ends meet,
to keep its property in proper operating condition and to pay
wages which will secure the most intelligent and loyal service
for the telephone user.
' YOUR loyalty to the telephone will make it easier for us to
serve you. (
