Reports of the Metropolitan
Water board, as prepared by R. B.
Howell, general manager, show that
for the first 10 months of 1919 oper
ating expenses, excluding deprecia-
lon, were 5312,481. as against
$238,422 for the corresponding pe-
lod of iyi7, an increase of 31 per
cent. -
"However," the report reads.
"during the same period there was
an increase in operating income of
1J per cent, more than enough to
offset these increased expenses, and
that, too, notwithstanding water
rates were reduced 5 per cent to
98 per cent of the consumers, Jan
uary, 1919."
Last year the water district laid
4.35 'miles of pipe lines and com
pleted a new 30,000,OQO-galIcn pump
at the Florence station. This pump
increased the high service pumping
capacity 75 per cent.
Another 20,000,000-gallon basin
was started at Florence last fall, the
cost of this improvement to be
;200,000.
On December 1 the plant carried
10,000 tons of coal, a supply for six
months.
The municipal ice plant operated
in connection with the water sys
tem, manufactured 31,844 tons of
ice last year. A 9,000-ton ice stor
age house was opened.
