I believe vou delivered letter from Mr. Stockbridge to Mrs. Gra ham upon your last visit, Mr. Wal Lillian cut directly to the core of the subject with her first question,;; rather an affirmation. "I did." Mr. Walters' voice was crisp, while his eyes watched my friend warily. - Lillian eyed .him tor a minute steadily, then bent toward him, her closed hands resting lightly on the table. "This is no good1 business, she announced. "We'll never get any where at this rate, for I can see. that you have already condemned Mrs. Graham's "attitude in this mat ter. . But I can give you my word of lienor that I know all the facts, and that instead of keeping back anything ih Mr. Stockbridge's fa vor, she is shielding him to such a degree that I, for one, am alarmed as to the advisability of her doing so. Mr. Walter s face held only po lite incredulity. Lillian's hand shot upward, drew a little token from her bodice. y "If I am-not mistaken as to my records this may mean something to you," she said. "It may convince you that my proffered word of hon or means exactly what I say," she observed quietly. The young attorney bent stifly forward, scrutinized the token which Lillian held in such fashion that only he could see it. He gave a dis tinct start of surprised recognition, then over his frank, open face spread a brick-red flash of embar rassment. "You you will pardon me, I hope," he said manfully, but there was distinct recognition of a super ior officer in his voice. "I I had no idea." y "Of coiirse, not," Lillian returned graciousfy, "and I should not have shown this to you, only that I thought it was best to clear things up at once. But now please forget that you have seen it. - It does not suit meyat all to be known as the possessor of this." "I understand, and I have not seen it, Mr. Walters said gravely, his poise recovered. . "Thank you and now we will go back to my affirmation of a few min utes ago. From things which Mrs. Graham heard over the telephone on ' the day of Mrs. Stockbridge's death, she has been, unable to convince her self of his innocence, although she has never breathed, such a belief even to me. But I have followed her mental processes pften enough"--she flashed an affectionate smile at me "to know what she is thinking. But she has kept the things which I give you my word are damning evidence on the face of them, strict ly to herself, despite qualms of con science as to her duty in the mat ter." The Color had gradually faded from the young attorney's face a Lillian s words, so crushing to his hopes of his, friend's vindication. It was only the pallid mask of him self which he turned toward her as she paused. - ' "And you do you share" he be gan, and his voice betrayed unmis takably to things, his admiring rec? ognition of Lillian's judgment, his fear that she might also have formed an adverse opinion of Kenneth Stockbridge. - Lillian hesitated only a moment. "You will pardon me, Madge, not telling, you this first?" she asked with that gracious thought for others which never deserts her. I "Of course," I Said farmly, and my nerves thrilled with anticipation. I had so futilely wondered what hef real opinion was. , , Esther Walter's glowirig cheeks lost some of their color, and I heard a little gasping breath from her, knew that her youthful, dramatic imagination was being thrilled to the utmost. Her brother's arms were folded across his chest and I guessed that they held that posture more to keep down, any betrayal of excite ment than for any other reason. "Remember," Lillian began slowly, "I cannot predict the acquittal of your friend. Indeed, I must tell you frankly that legally as things stand now his chances look pretty bad, es pecially if by some mischance the things which Mrs. Graham heard should be discovered." She paused, as if to choose care fully her next words. I felt like screaming out to her to hurry, knew that Arthur Walters and his sister shared by impulse.
