Arthur , Maitland ia the managing director. , Mr, Maitland aays he li endeavor ing "to produce the best plays by the best players, under the intimate conditions furnished by the small house, and to do it all under condi tions and in surroundings that are artistic and harmonious." . The Maitland theater is a "theater unusual." The walls of the play house are paneled in some pale blue material that looks like silk, this being shirred at top and bottom in such a way as to contribute its soft cess to other good coloring and un- usual lighting effects. Figures of Chinese actors add a dash of color and character here and there. Instead of conventional stage scenery, draperies of various shades and . lines are used, there being . a "repertory" of more than 2.000 varda of drapery fabrics shelved for use as- needed. Regular house doors and windows are used at any place they may be required, the draperies fitting into and around them. Mr. Maitland has devised a system of suspending draperies and of control ling them by means of hooks and trolleys in such a way that four changes may be made in 10 minutes, thua doing away with the necessity of employing stage hands. The ef fect ol all of this is to add greatly' to the softness, flexibility and gen eral effectiveness of the staging. 8ociaI Settlement. The A. My people are quite wealthy and I have everything I can wian ipr excepting the companion amp or the opposite eex. I find It Impossible to keep the company of any young man. Two years ago I had steady company and he moved away rrom here and has never re turned, but folks seem, to think : am atlll enraged to him. Often tlmea young men aak permission to can, ana tney never come back; omy recently a young man, a very nice one, too, escorted me home from a church social. I gave him permission to call on tha following Sunday; he never came or as much as called me over the phone to say he couldn't come, and now that's tne way I am treated. I dance, attend parties and all so clal gatherings possible, and, to be plain spoken about It, I simply can not eaten a Deau. I use but very little powder and never any rouge. I dress carefully ana try to oe as nice as I can to every one as possible. I only as sociate with the better class of peo ple in my community; my people would not hear of me Inviting other tnan a wealthy man to call, and oftentimes I attribute that to my lonesomeness. I think even though a girl's parents are wealthy she could keep company with a young man who is less fortunate If he is honorable. I read your columns faithfully and I feel that you have helped me considerably at different times by your advice to others. Fermit me to ask two questions in closing: Will you encourage writ ers to your column to give their ideas of my feelings, and, last but not least, should a young man be kept out of society simply because his father was not on the square? I appreciate your efforts. M. A. I think this letter might be dis cussed in the lovelorn column with some degree of interest. Therefore, I shall welcome letters from readers and print them in this department. Too Fat Dear Miss Fairfax, Omaha Bee: Can you please tell me what kind of a diet a fat person should eat to reduce himself? Of what kind of food should this consist of? How long should a person eat this? If you do not know the answer to these questions, then tell me what is the remedy to reduce fatness? If exer cise, what kind of exercise? What la the remedy to reduce the fatness of tne leg? If exercise, what kind? What can a person do to make him self grow? Please answer these questions, as you do not know what it is to be called "Fatty." They say no matter how fat a nerson is he can reduce himself by eating a car- tain kind of diet What is the best kina or face powder? What can be done to make the hair rrow? Thank you. A TWIN. Evidently you wish to be made over. I cannot do this, but I can give you some excellent general rules. To reduce flesh eliminate siDreaKiast aitogeiner. Tne nrst rew "flays you will mlsa your ham and eggs and coffee and cereal, but after a week you will not notice it For lunch take something; without starch or fat For Instance, apirtach or cabbage, whole wheat bread, but very little of It For dinner take vegetables and salads for the most part eliminating , butter, potatoes, peas and starchy vegetables. A small quantity of meat la permissi ble. Thia seems like a rigid diet, but the stomach Is a victim of habit and only calls for what It la accustomed to receiving. After a short time a small quantity of food will suffice. Exercise by walking, rolling, bend ing In fact the more exercise you take the less flesh you accumulate. There Is no limit to this. One who is Inclined to be fat must keep up the diet I have no recipe for growth. Massage the scalp with a good oil to make the hair grow. There are a number of good powders on the market, and what agrees with one skin is harf ul to another, so you will have to experiment However, the diet given herewith will clear your skin, clear the white of your eyes and reduce the size of the pores. Making excuses for eating quantities, or Improperly, will not reduce you the human system takes no heed of Thanksgiving and ChrUtmaa and Sunday and feast day Heart Beats By A. K.
