RINGER RETURNS
FROM 'MYSTERY'
EASTERN TRIP
Refuses to Confirm Rumor
That His Traveling Com
panion Is the New Police
Commissioner. .
, J. D. Ringer, police commissioner,
returned yesterday morning from
n eastern trip, on which he started
uO days ago and which has been at
tended by more or less mystery.
: The homecoming of Mr. Ringer
did not serve to clear the mystery,
insofar as Mr. Ringer himself would
vouchsafe any information.
The police commissioner arrived
at Union, station, at 9:30 a. m., ac
companied by a man slightly short
er than himself and attired in gar
ments which indicated a discrim
inating taste. '
Says Only "Acquaintance."
Rumors that Mr. Ringer'a travel
ing companion was the new police
inspector could not be confirmed by
questioning the police commissioner,
who insisted: "He was only a
chance acquaintance I met on the
train."
Mr.-Ringer proceeded to the city
hall alone and went directly to his
office.
"I went east on city business, on
police business, and developments
will disclose just what I went after
and' what I . accomplished," Mr.
Ringer said. ,
Refuses to Comment.
' "It is understood in Omaha that
while in New York you conferred
with Arthur Wood on the matter of
electing a police inspector for
Omaha. What do you wish to say
or. that?" he was asked.
, J "Developments will show just
what I did in New York," he re
plied. , "How long will it be before de
velopments of your trip will be
disclosed so mat tne puonc may
know what you accomplished while
away?" was the next question.
"I am unable to answer that
question now," was the reply.
Was Away Ten Days.
Mr. Ringer was away 10 days, and
during his absence information re
ceived from the city hall indicated
that he selected a police .inspector
while in the east and that the new
inspector is to gradually -work into
the position or chief ot police, now
held by Marshall Eberstein. It was
also rumored that Mr. Ringer had
been looking over the field of Young
Mens Christian association execu
tives with a view of finding a man
who might be available for inspector
of police.
Maj.-Gen. Leonard Wood, while
in Omaha durine the week after "the
court house riot, recommended that
Mr. Ringer should consult Mr.
Wood of New York, who would as
sist him in selecting an inspector.
Mr. Ringer, however, avers that
he is not ready to take the public
into his confidence.

his department should have power
to remove snow from walks of de
linquents and assess the cost against
the property as a special tax.
