New York. Dec. 8. Although many Im
portant factors Influencing the stock mar
ket remained unsettled over the week-en,
prices wero disposed to move forward dur
ing the greater part of the day.
Sentiment as reflected by market letters
waa mora hopeful respecting the Mexican
situation and the coal strike.
The Increasing seriousness of the fuel
shortage was manifested, ' however, by
further reduction or complete suspension
of operatlona at various centers of In
dustry, Failure of the United States supreme
court to hand down decisions In the much
discussed stock dividend and prohibition
rases occasioned some disappointment, but
did not extend beyond a few Issues.
Another slump In foreign exchange with
sterling', franca and I Ires at greatest dis
counts ever known, waa neutralized In part
by the I per cent rate for call loans. In
the last 15 minutes of the session, how
ever, call money rose to 8 per cent, 10
per cent being quoted at the close.
Reactions of 1 to 3 points accompanied
the money flurry, the tone changing from
firmness to irregularity In the final deal
ings. Steels, equipments, motors and ship
pings led the moderate reaction. Sales
amounted to 1,000.000 shares.
Two groups of stocks, sugars and metala
derived material benefits from trade con
ditions. Active sugar shares were 1 to 5
points up at their best and coppers rallied
from their recent depression with an ad
vance of i to 1 cent per pound for re
fined metals.
Libertv, Victory and foreign bonds were
mixed as to trend, but local utilities and
several of the convertible railroad bonds
were firm to strong. Total sales (par value)
aggregated $26,875,00(1. Old United States
bonds were unchanged on call.
