OF LIVING MEN French Scientist' Finds Chemical Change in Tissues Immistak able Proof of Death. Paris' Dec. 7. There has been much speculation among mediAl men over the possibility that sol diers, buried hastily after battle, may not have been dead. Occasionally a newspaper carries a story of a victim of catalepsy un dergoing a narrow escape from pre mature' burial, and recently an Eng lish daily told of a nurse who was found in a forest between Berlin and Potsdam, apparently dead from an overdose of veronal, and who was placed in a coffin ready for burial. Just before closing the coffin the undertaker discovered to his horror that her h$art was beating and re moved her at once to a hospital, where she was given electrical treat ment, under which she finally opened her eyes and uttered a few incoher ent words. Such authenticated incidents cause the reader to ask if there is not some infallible test of death known to the 'medical profession. Change in Tissues. In the "Review of Comparative Pathology," Dr. Severin Icard of Marseilles gives the results of his investigations in progress' during a long period into this subject. His test is physico-chemical and has to do with the alkalinity of the body in life. In other words, as long as life is present in the human organism the fluids (with tfie excep tion of the urin, the gastric juices and the sweat) are alkaline. On the other hand, the tissues after death are acid. For a short period after death the tissues are both alkaline and acid, and the litmus paper test shows both blue and red. But seven or eight hours after death is supposed to have taken place the test is posi tive; if life is extinct the acid test is unmistakable and the blue paper becomes a deep wine ed. Urged as Death Test This passage from alkalinity to acidity is found in all the animal series, and as far back as 1870 it was urged as a test for death. Dr. Delagree, who proposed in cases where death was doubtful to introduce litmus paper into small incisions in the muscular mass. But this method is likely to be repugnant to the family of the subject an ob jection which Dr. Icard has over come in his experiments. Dr. Icard has made use of a sim ple method for procuring a few drops of serous matter from the tis sues without in any way mutilating the body. He attaches a small pair of forceps to a fold of skin and clamps them in place, leaving them in position for five to six minutes. At the end of this time the forceps are removed and in the depressions on each side of the "pleat" of flesh made by the confining instrument are seen to ooze several drops of serum. , "There are but three good hus bands in the world and niy husband is all three of them," she said re cently during a talk to women stu dents at the Woman's U. S. Training corps. PERSHING TO BE IN OMAHA FULL DAY0N JAN. 8 Will Also Be at Union Station for Two Hours the -' Morning of Dec 24.' General John J. KISS A MONTH NOT ENOUGH, IS COURT'S RULING Wife Refused Divorce When Husband Testifies She Put Caresses on Schedule. Los Angeles Dec. 7. The one kiss a month that John Emery La sater testified his wife, Mrs. Olive Elizabeth Lasater, allowed nim in conformity with her theory that woman should dominate the home caused Judge Crail to deny the wife a decreeof divorce on her charge of cruelty and abuse. "For nine years I did not know what happiness meant," Lasater tes tified. "I well remember when sh first told me of this theory. I came home from the office late one night and found her reading in bed. Got Idea From Book. "She put down her book and then said she had reached the conclusion that the woman must dominate the family; that she must make herself superior to the man. The first step along this line sbe said was to cease all forms of caressing. When she submitted to my caresses, she said, she allowed me to dominate her. "She had found freedom from bondage, she told me, and said she 'joyed in freedom.' From that time . on she allowed me to kiss her once a month and no more. She said should bestow only spiritual caresses upon her. I conformed with her wishes for' nine years." Children Aid Mother. Lasater's son and daughter testi fied for their mother. "It is seldom," said Judge Crail, "that this court has heard explained so clearly how a family was disrupt ed by the refusal of the wife to be a real wife. The husband's life could have been made pleasant, but it was not." Exams for Special Officers of U. The "shimmy" is as typically American as chewing, gum and toothpicks, according to students of American history. The records say that Columbus, on dis covering the new world, saw the In dians stepping along the beach at Guanahana (which he nicknamed San Salvador) as the sun burst upon October 12, 1492. They were hopping around in what they called the green corn t dance in thanksgiving for the new crops and the squaws were rippling like corn in the breeze. , The records state further that the redskins whom Christopher carried back to Spain with him performed . for Isabella.-' Ferdinand became so interested that he declared a holiday and increased his blood pressure 10 points by learning the darn thing The social dances of the Indians, according to the accounts left by the early explorers, were of great va riety. They usually darj-d in a north and south fashion, too. What co.tild be shimmier than that? " For autoniobilists a lock has been . patented for securing robes or bag gage to the rail of a car or to fasten steering geers against movement
