' It was hard to recognize Mother
Graham's voice, usually noticeable
for its austerity, in the -softened ac
cents she emploved toward Lillian's
charming little daughter But Mar
ion long ago stormed the last citadel
of my mother-in-law's heart by her
absolute devotion to the baby, and
is now so firmly entrenched that the
elderly woman indulges her almost
as atrociously as she does her small
grandson.
"Do you want him to take his
nap?" the little girl responded in
stantly. "It is time for it," the grandmoth
er sait! smiling.
, "And mayn't f come, too, while
you go that funny humble-bee way?"
Mother Graham's face flushed with
pleasure. She is very proud of her
ability to put Junior "to sleep wit.1) a

"She has a front seat at every per
formance," my mother-in-law. re-.

Lillian's eyes and mine followed

direction. Through a gap in the
trees we saw Major Grantland alight
trom.the car and go -up the steps.
Lillian rose abruptly from the gar
den bench where we had vated our
selves. ,
' "I'm going in the house," she
said with decision. "Mrs Durkce
said this morning she was going to
bring the poor, dear major over if
be came today, and. I should be
shocking company for any one. I'm
in simply a horried mood." v
I. put out my hand and seized,
her arm firmly before she could
move.
"You're not going to take a sin
gle step away from herel" I said
grimly. "If you do I shall scream
loudly, and when everybody runs
cut I shall firmly assert that von
have been kicking me brutally"
"That may not be a falsehood if
you don't let me go," she threaten-,
ed, then as she glimpsed the very
real discomfort in my face she
changed her tone abruptly. "What's
the matter? You look as if. you
were in a blue funk." -
"I am," I confessed miserably,

"Stand it, but the combination
makes you woozj'," Lillian finished
quickly. "Same here. I don't know
what has gotten into her Fluffiness.
but she has evidently decided that
she is the goddess in the machine oJ
a romantic affair between you. and
(he poor, dear, major, and she
means to involve you both in a more
or less platonic triangle, ;f she has
to take you both by neck and heels
and chuck you into it. But don't -worry.
Seeing the performance is
like taking a dose Of quinine, but I'll
stick. "Never, never shall it be said
that I deserted Mrs. Micawber.'

No Coal In His Home, But '
He'll Be Warm for 30 Days
Though completely out of coal in
his home, William . Spady, 3120 .
North Thirty-first street, will be
moderately warm for the next 30
days. He was given a jail sentence
in Central police court yesterday for
vagrancy. Special officers arrested
him Tuesday night in the Burling
ton railroad yards when they cam;
upon him picking up coal about the
tracks.
Spady is a negro. The officers said
they nearly stumbled over him. in
the dark.
