Paris,. Nov. 30. Egypt has two
profound grievances. The first and
greatest is against England. The
second is against President Wilson,
who, by his attitude toward our na
tion, has laid himself open to the
suspicion that he is working hand
in glove with England for the op
pression of our people and the dash
ing of our national hopes.
No less than 63 times England.
Fince her "peaceful penetration" of
Egvpt, has officially pledged her
word to us that we should have our
liberty, so far as she was concerned,
whenever we were ready to shake
r,ff the nominal sovereignty of
Turkev. ' ,
, In 1914 England declaredher
protectorate over Egypt in the face
of these promises. We refused tp
recognize her at officially, but of
fered no resistance, seeing in Eng
land's action an opportunity to

keep her word in the hour of victory
and declare hen recognition of
Egypt as an autonomous and inde
pendent state.
Hopes of Freedom.
Our hopes of freedom were en
couraged to the point of veritable
certiinty vhen America entered the
war under the principles enunciated
in Mr. Wilson's 14 points. "We felt
assured that under no circumstances
' could England continue her oppres
sion of Egvpt in defiance of her
American ally's stand on the ques
tion of "self-determination," for the
weaker nations. We counted, as a
matter of course, upon President
Wilson's firm backing of the prin
ciples for which 'he himself ,tood
sponsor before the world.

England stands revealed as our de
liberate oppressor, President Wilson
as her aider and abettor.. By the
terms of the treaties of Versailles
.and St. Germain, England forced
Germany- to recognize her protec
torate over Egypt, and President
Wilson, without an official word of
protest, sanctioned those treaties,
signing the first jfrith his own
hand. . . v, ' I
England's hand in Egypt has
proven heavier than the Turks.
Half a century ago, under the ty
rannic -rule of Ismail, fcgypt, wiin
a population at that time of only
6,000,000, had 130,000 children m her
schools. Under British oppression
the proportion has dwindled until,
with a population of 13,000,000, less
than half the former number of
children are permitted to obtain an
education. England knows that
there is no better way to enslave
a race than to condemn it to igno
rance and illiteracy.
Now Totally Disarmed.
In the days o f Turkish i sover
eignty the Egyptians at least had
recourse to the last resort of armed
revolt. Under England all arms
have disappeared from the hapds of
the Egyptians. We are totally dis-

was constantly ill-treated by his
parents, and the girl Katherina, who
was employed by the family as a

Remiving a donkey from her
master's stable she bound Hartl se
curely to the saddle with cords, and
seating herself in front of hinv rode
at midnight to the neighboring
town Eberscljwang. There she and
the unwilling, but unresisting bride
groom were married in the early
hours of the moring.-
Two days later six armed
gendarmes, dispatched at the
reqeust of Hartel's parents, ar
rived at the inn at which the
couple were staying, and ordered
Katherina, in the jname of the law,
to restore her husband to his par
'ental home.
When the girl refused she and
Jakob were handcuffed together and
marched to the court at Reid, where
the judge declaring the marriage
illegal and void, sent the woman to
prison.
Two hours later Jakob, who was
evidently in fear of his parents' an
ger, was found , dead. He had
hanged himself in his bedroom.

fight against the .Turks would Eng
land put weapons in our. hands for
fear they might later be turned
against it when we knew the truth
about' its ambitions in Egypt. In
stead it called on .us for laborers
ano we gladly furnished 1,200,000
men to help its engineers on the bat
tlefields. When the peace conference met
in Paris we organized a delegation
to present our claims to the "big
five." It was when this delegation
set out for Paris that England first
showed its hand. It forbade the
delegates to leave Egypt and succed
ed in holding up their departure .un
til the riots of last spring called the
world.ttention to this manifesta
tion of British tyranny and, to save
its face, England was forced to let
u? go. Up to this time we still re
tained our misplaced confidence'in
Mr. Wilson's promises of interna
tional justice. Four days of Paris
sufficed to disillusion us.
On April 19 we arrived in Pans.

ience of President Wilson. Our re
quest was completely ignored and
on April 22 we were stupefied to re
ceive a telegram from Cairo in
forming us that the American
charge affairs there had published
an official statement announcing
that President Wilson had recog
nized the British protectorate over
Egypt. - .
From that time until the pres
ident's departure from' France we
bombarded him V requests for a
personal hearings. 'Shortly before he
sailed we received the onjy commu-,
nication he deigned t(j address to
w, a note from his secretary regret
ting that the pressure of affairs
'.vould not permit Mr. Wilson to re
ceive our representative.
Enslaved, But Not Pacified.
England, to justify its tyrannical
seizure of Egypt, claims that the
Egyptian question is one of interior
domestic . policy." But it knows how
difficult it will be tp prove this con
tention in the eyes of the' world and
particularly the eyes of the Ameri
ca people; so, in order' to pull the
wool dver the eyes of the free na
tions, it has constituted a British
rommissjon of inquiry to report -on
the Egyptian claing after a study of
the situation on the ground.
That commission, as recently
named, is headed hv Lord Milner,
a dyed-in-the-wool British imperial
ist, who has written ( at length in
favor of the. annexation of Egypt
to Great Britain. , Everyone of Lord
Milner's assistants is noted for his
imperialistic opinions. Thus Eng
land plans to seal Egypt's fate with
a verdjet rendered by a packed jury.
' But Egypt has refused to submit.
Every Egyptian of note has an
nounced that he will refuse to re
ceiveor communicate with any
mem'ber or agent of the Milner com
mission. A complete boycott has
been declared against Britain's jury.
If Lord Milner comes to Egypt he
will not find a single native of any
rank ready to hold two minutes'
conversation with him. England
knows this. She has adjourned the
investigation of the Milner investi
gation "to a later date." That "later
date" wifll be never, for Egypt, al
though .she cannot resist, will never
submit to British or any other for
eign tyrannization. She is en
slaved, but not pacified.

As if thp various strikes throughout the country, J
; and demands on the part of workingmen that it appears J
impossible to grant without seriously crippling the ma
chinery of commerce and industry were not enough, two
more factors have entered the arena to do battle with the
. conscientious business man who is endeavoring to adjust
. affairs to new conditions and get a peep of the sun rising J
behind the dark clouds of the business outlook.
These are the weather, and the expectation, as pre
dieted by Senator Lodge, that the peace treaty and league
will be saved for injection into the next campaign.
Will there. never be surcease?

Is business to have a chance?
' Selfishness may be at the root of it, and President
Wilson majr class the rest of the country as inhumani-
;tarians for not subordinating all other considerations to
;to the happiness of future generations of the world, but
!the fact remains that., to the average man the biggest
political question of the day is how to get business back
; to normal, and coax the wary dollar back into sight once
;more out of the far off skies of hazy speculation, and
world dreams.
Present conditions ' are an outrage upon every citi
zen of the country who is not ify a position to profiteer."
The producer is not (profiteering, because half or
more of the increased price never reaches him, and what
he does get is dissipated in paying the higher prices for
; the productions of the other fellow.
Not all the wage earners are in a position through
labor organiations to "profiteer," and those who are not,
make up themajority'of the citizenship of the country.
Under such conditions it is impossible for industry
to get off its "dead center." .
Capital is wary of investing, and the only construc
tion work undertaken is that which is absolutely neces
sary.' That Omaha has battled successfully against such
conditions is due to the fact that it is the "biggest booster"
city of its size in the country.
It has more' concentrated "pep" and energy to the
square inch than have half a dozen other cities that can
be named, combined. -
With this spirit of the olden and hardy pioneer in
vigorating everybody from the energetic newsie to the
bank president, the city has forged steadily ahead, every
body with his' shoulder to the wheel, sharing in the gen
eral concern throughout the country over the situation,
But business can't j?e conducted without intercourse
with. the outside world. .
If the outside world has no business, it will curtail
the exploitation of Omaha's industries, and sooner or later
the conditions that are reported elsewhere will become
more apparent here.
The administration has the power to pull the country
out of the present hole, and this power should be turned
now to be devoted wholly and entirely to that purpose.
"If it isn't, the business interests of the country will
turn, as did the country itself when pushed too far, and
the result will be an advance through the Argonne of in
dustrial bolshevism, and that will rout out and strew the
ground with the gentlemen who are still politically snipe-
shooting.
