street, reported to the South Side
police Thursday afternoon that a
box containing $500 and a deed to
his home and lot was stolen from
his cellar Thursday while the family
was partaking of. turkey and cran
berry sauce.
Russo said he had his $500 in .gold '
and greenbacks hid under a ton of
coal in his cellar, The police are
watching the house with the ex
pectation of the thief coming back
for the coal. Russo says he is
thankful the crooks did not take the
coal and the house and lot.
A neighbor woman told Russo
she saw a man coitie:out of the cel
lar and when she.asked him what he
was doing there, Kesaid he was a
policeman and, had & right in the
cellar as he wasj searching for booze.
Qrocer and Wife Charged
With Possession of Liquor
John Terigariui and his wife, 5115
South Twenty-sixth street, where
they conduct a small grocery, were
arrested Wednesday night by Offi
cers Haze and Baughman on a
charge of having illegal possession
of intoxicating liquors. . '
The officers searched the place
and allege they found two quart bot
tles of alcohol and a bottle of wine,
which will be analyzed by the city
chemist. v v '
The Teragaruis told . the police
they had the liquor for their own
use and had prepared for a little
Thanksgiving cheer, while the offi
cers allege the couple have been
keeping the stuff on hand for sale.
The case will be heard in police
court Friday morning.

Victim of Coal Shortage
Arrested On Drunk Charge
Tom Duckworth, Twenty-fourth
and U streets, a barber, the police
say, was found drunk, hugging a
steam radiator on the third floor of
the Scargo block, near the postof
fice, at an early thursday morning.
When arrested, Duckworth told the
police he was a victim of the coal
shortage and went into the block
to get warm.
Smallpox Epidemic.
Toronto, Nov. 27. More than
801) cases of smallpox in mild form
in Ontario have been reported to
the ministry of health. About one
half of these are in Toronto. All
travel into New York and Michigan
must show certificates that they
have been vaccinated within one
month.
