THE OMAHA SUNDAY BEE; - NOVEMBER 23." : 1919.
D'ANNUNZIO HAS
PRECIPITATED
ADRIATIC CRISIS
i w-amawa-
Further Aggressive Move by
;,;Fiume Emancipator May
Result In War With,
Jugo-Siavs.
r-a.
. - London, Nov. 22. The situation
on the Adriatic at a result of Ga
briele d'Annunzio's campaign has
" , reached a crisis. Private advices
leave no doubt that he is determined
to annex Dalmatia and attack Alon
tenettro.
The Jago-Slavs are stated to have
concentrated troops and to be pre
oared to resist aggression.
Another report says a republican
undercurrent directed against the
Italian monarchy exists among
d'Annumzio s forces.
May Mean War.
..l it is stated in the advices that
further a&gression by D'AnnunaO
will certainly precipitate hostilities
' with the Jugo-Slavs, who, however,
ft is declaned, will direct their at
tack against D'Annunzio and not
against the Italian government
It is not known, however, wheth
1 or the. imureent ooet leader shares
the reported ambition of this mili-
tary element to attack the govern
ment.
D'Annunao. it aDoears. has been
stirred to further efforts by the fact
that the Ita&an elections were tin
favorable to his cause. Many ad
, venturers are flocking to his stand-
ard, the reports state, and among a
certain element there seems to be a
desire to make . him , president of
Italy. 1 ,
"t - " Wants to Add Dalmatia.
"JZ Some well informed quarters be
Heve he merely deteires to annex
'Dalmatia for Italy and has no re
' publican ambition. Whatever his
" attitude may be on this question,
liowever, there appears to be no
' rfoubt that he has not abandoned his
plans of aggression in the Adriatic,
7 A late report trom rome says trie
military party, which favors the an
nexation of Dalmatia has brought
' such strong pressure to bear upon
the government that the, situation is
delicate.
" Today's dispatches supplement
-Advices from Rome received last
' night which reported the American
' embassy actively engaged in watch
ing the situation, which was report
ed as holding the possibility of
serious development from hour to
. honr, as regarded both Italy proper
and the Dalmatian coast.
Italy Is on Brink.
" Venice, to which Naval Attache
Reeves has gone to report on con
ditions, is only about 75 miles from
Fiume on the water route and
nearer yet by the' land lines. The
possibility of a move into Istria by
D'Annunzio was mentioned ,in re-
' cent advices, in which case the pre-
' diction was made that whole divi
sions ot' Italian regulars would be
likely to follow him. An Istrian
move would take him to the bor
ders of Venetia, in which ,VeTiice
' lies.
Italy's internal conditions have
" been rendered m6re uncertain by
the recent elections, which gave the
socialists largely increased represen
tation, i
The issue is sharply drawn between
the nationalist elements, whieh ap
plaud D'Annunzio's Fiume adven
' ture, and the pacifist socialists, who
are bitterly against any move which
would likely again involve Italy in
' war. -

SDringfield. III. Nov. 22. Ralph
Deicken, whose dollar tips to barbers
and expensive clothes gained him
the title of the "Beau Brummel
bank clerk," was arrested on a fed
eral warrant charging him with em
bezzlement of $27,000 from the
Ridgely Farmers' State bank, where
he was "employed as paying teller
until a month ago.
Miss. Jessie Conner, bookkeeper,
was arrested on the same charge.
Miss Conner, it is alleged, assisted
