Bit of "Home" Arranged for
American Peacetime Tars
Washington, Nov. 2. A bit of
"home", will be found in ports
throughout the world by sailors of
the American merchant marine and
navy as Trie result of a new peace
time activity announced by the,
American Red Ctoss. Small club
rooms built especially for use by
American seamen will be established
in nearly SO seaports in South and
Central America, the West Indies
and the far east. They will be ad
ministered by the insular and for
eign division of the Red Cross.
The shipping board regards the
plan as a valuable aid to its efforts
to recruit tne thousands of sailors
required to man the new American
merchant marine, and to improve the
class of American seamen. There
are now more thaft 55,000 American
merchant sailors serving on ships
flying the stars and stripes.
National Industrial
Conference is Called
- St. Louis, Nov. 2. A warning
that agents of disorganization are
infesting the country to cripple
production at a time when Amecica
needs most of all maximum produc
tion is contained in call sent out
by the American mining congress
for a national industrial conference
to be held here to "work out a busi
ness program for the nation."
It is proposed that the conference
will be held in connection with
American mining congress, the
national gold conference and the
national conference of war minerals
producers here November 17 to
21, inclusive. Invitations to the in
dustrial conference were sent to
governors of all states, to national
officials, and to state and national
commercial bodies.
Large Wage Increase Given
Shoe Workers by Arbitrators
London, Nov. 2. A Berlin wire
largest wage increase ever given a
labor organization was announced in
an award to shoe workers by the
state board of conciliation and arbi
tration. The prices given by the
board are $43.20 a week for -jhoc
cutters, shoe sorters and leather
sorters. $38.20 for cloth lining cut
tersand $32.50 for top cutters. The
former prices were $35, $30 and $26,
respectively. The demand was made
for $48 a week.
The decision will affect 1.100 cut
ters in this city and later will extend
through the district, affecting 3,000.
Reds Murder English Couple.
London, Nov. 2. Baron and
Baroness Woerman, nephew and
niece .of the late Lord Armistead,
were murdered bjf the bolsheviki in
Riga last May, according to news
reaching the Armisteaa family at
Dundee, Scotland. Advices add that
a grand nephew of Lord Armistead,
John Cecil Armistead, was shot iu
March after having been in prison
three months. -
