FRIENDS CHIDE
BOY ABOUT GIRL;
TAKES OWN LIFE
Franklin S. Patterson Commits
Suicide in Home of Chum
Durjng Stag
Party.
Being chided .about his serious
mindedness. after having been re
fused an appointment with a girl
friend, is the reason assigned to the
suicide of Franklin S. Patterson, 16
years old, 3333 Pine street. Young
Patterson shot himself through the
heart Saturday night while attend
ing a stag party of fellow high
school students at the home of Kl
bert Evans, 3015 South Thirty-third
street. He staggered from the room .
in which he committed the deed and
died in the presence of his class
mates. Calls Girl on Phone.
Patterson called the girl. Frames
Yeager, ,14 years old, 2959 Harris
street, over the phone shortly after
he had arrived at the party. She
told him she would be unable to sre
him that night, as she was going to
attend a party in Dundee, Elbert
Evans said. Shortly after he tonk
ins coat and hat and left Evans'
home, telling him he "would be
back in a short while."
, Young Tatterson went to his
home. He passed his mother as
he went upstairs to get a hand
kerchief, he said. When he came
down, lie kissed his mother good
bye, and told her he "would see her
again."
"I noticed tears in the boy's
eyes," the mother said. "I knew
something was the matter with
him, and I questioned him."
Goes Home for Gun.
"Oh, I just got a little pepper
in mv eyes, mother," he replied.
Ihats why 1 got the handker
chief." ' A half hour later he returned to
the scene of the stag party, took
off his coat and hat in the hall and
walked directly to a side bedroom..
Two shots rang out and Patterson
staggered from the romn into the
midst of the party. Elbert Evans
took hold of him, saying: "Come on.
Frank, you're carrying this too far."
The boys were terrified when
they discovered their school chum .
had actually shot himself. Patter
son died several minutes liter.
Were Not Sweethearts.
Frances Yeager broke down hys
terically when informed of the
youth's death.
"They weren't sweethearts." Mr.
Yeager, father of the girl, said. "I
knew they were school chums, but
Frances never took Franklin seri
ously as a lover. She's too younf
for that."
Frances said: "I made a date with
Franklin this afternoon to go riding
with him in his new car. I forgot
all about it and went down town
with mother. When I returned I
learned he had waited at the house
three hours for me. In the evening
he came to the house again and grew
angry when I told him I was going
to a party with Nelson AlcK.ee!, a
freshman at Central high school.
Chided by Friends.
"I did not consider that Franklin
felt seriously about me. I knew,
however, his friends chided him
about thinking so much of rr.e."
The boy is survived by his father,
S. V. Patterson, a railroad conduc
tor; his mother and young sister.
Gladys.
County Investigator x Dempsey
says there" will be no inquest, as the
boy's parents are satisfied the deed
was suicide.
