the K.' F. W. C annual gatherings
are so evident as to be axiomatic:
Most of the progressive and keen
minded women in the state are in
some way identified with club life.
Many of the most alert and active
among them attend the state con

Fine Arts to Finance
Circulating Picture
Library for S. S.
The Omaha Society of Fine Arts
is interested in a valuable work in
connection with the Social Settle
ment, and at the recent board meet
ing $S0 was voted for the enlarge
ment and maintenance of a circulat
ing library of pictures.
At present there are only 24 pic
tures in the collection, but Mrs.
Caldwell, head resident of the settle
ment, says that the library is not
only exceedingly popular but very
greatly appreciated. . The pictures
are for the most part prints- of
famous paintings. ;.
.A picture is loaned to someone
for a month upon a plan something
similar to that of the public library.
At the end of the month the picture
must be returned and another pic
ture may be taken out.
The teacher of the-Americanization
group or other visitors from
the settlement who make calls upon
the family often find one of these
pictures the only bright spot on the
wall of an otherwise barren home.
Somethinz of the picture and the
painter is accordingly told by the
visitor, and this gives an aaaea m-
hostesses and each member is invit

terest, both to the picture itself and
to the desire for more knowledge
and a larger share in the' life of
this country, where the .oppor

ready to take them.
The queen of Belgium, wlio is
now visiting America, is one .of the
most intellectual of the ' loyal
women of Europe. This is not sur
prising, since she is the daughter of
the splendid scientist, the late Duke
Charles Theodore of Barvariaj The
queen's intellectual culture greatly
exceeds in range and depth the edu
cation that is generally thought
necessary for a princess. Like her
father, she has a curious interest in
new ideas in science, art and litera
ture; she knows how to investigate
comprehend and draw conclu
sions. She studied medicine as a
girl and graduated with the degree
of M. D., at Leipzig shortly before
her marriage. She is a patron of art
and literature and has written sev
eral volumes of essays and short
stories. .
