Chicago Grain and Provision.
Chicago, Oct. 14. Much weakness at
times developed in tha corn market today
and the December delivery touched the
lowest price in mora than three weeks. De
pression In the New York stock market
was ons 01 tne principal bearish factors.
Price closed unsettled. U to lUo net
lower; December, $1.214 to $1.21 and
May. $1.20 to $1.20; oats lost H to He
In provision the outcome ranged from
eoe aecnne 10 iia aavaace.
Unusual absence ef buying order char
acterlzed the corn market from th out'
set This circumstance was ascribed
largely to the uncertainties of th In
dustrlal situation and In particular to
th shinning difficulties on tha Atlantic
seaboard. Beside the receipt of corn
nere were larger man mere was Im
mediate demand for and sign were not
wanting that increased husking and shell
Ing would result In continued liberal
movement from first hands. Under such
circumstances the weakness of securities
on Wall street attracted special notice,
and many buyer In the corn trade held
off temporarily a much aa possible.
Oats were eaaler with corn. About the
only activity waa en tba part of bearish
pit speculators.
Export sale for deferred shipment gave
strength to lard. Pork and ribs, how
ever, reflected th downward tendency of
nog ana grain.
New York. Oct 14. An irregular open
ing toon developing into weakness, a vig
orous rally at' midday and another vio
lent reaction in the final hour aummar.
uta the changes of today' extremely ae
tive ai.d unsettled stock market.
The break of the first hour when specu
lative Issuvs declined 3 to 13 points, was
attributed to eventa ever th double holi
day, especially the industrial ltuatlon,
which wa intensified by local labor dis
turbances. Rallies during th mid-eaalon which
largely reduced early losses and estab
lished several noteworthy high records,
acconipantsd th Initial 3 per cent call
loan rate and more hopeful advices from
steel centers.
Ths sweeping setback later began when
call loans lumped to 12 per cent and
then to 14, an additional 1 per cent being
paid, according to report, on all indus
trial collateral.
Reversals of tha last half hour earrled
steels, equipments and various speoialties
10 lowest levels ana impaired rallies else
where by otie-half to two-thtras. The
market closed In considerable disorder
with a weak ton. Sale amounted to
1,675,000 shares.
U. S. Steel suffered sn extreme loss of
about Hi point at Its worst rallying
only a fraction, but allied shares offered
less resistance. New maximums by Gen
eral Motors. Stutz, Pierce Arrow, Mexi
can Petroleum and Hide and Leather pre
ferred melted away under the heavy sell
ing at the end.
Industrial Alcohol, which also scored a
new racord, retained 9 of Its 14 points
rise.
Time funds retlectsd the Btrlngent call
prices, 7 per cent being paid on
industrials for short periods. Moderate
loans were made on prime collateral at
I to m per cent Excepting the 314s.
Liberty bonds were heavy with the gen
eral bond list. Internationals also easing.
Total sales, par value aggregated $13,
350,000. Old U. 8, bonds were unchanged
on call.
