Carranza Holds Up Plan
to Establish New Bank
'Mexico City, Oct. 10. The initia
tive recently submitted to congress
by President Carranza providing
for a "Banco Unico del Republico"
and a new system of credits has been
vrithdrawn by the executive, who
explained that changed conditions
made the withdrawal necessary. The
newspapers here, however, assert
that the Department of Treasury is
ttill at work on a new banking law
which may be presented to congress
shortly.
Terrier Travels 5,000 Miles.
Buena Vista, Colo., Oct. 10.
Traveling de luxe in a private com
partment, consisting of a covered
basket, sufficiently perforated to per
mit of ventilation, "Salty," a small
French terrier, arrived here after a
journey of over 5,000 miles. '"Salty's"
master, Wesley K. Stevens, of this
place, just discharged from the navy,
secured the dog in France and had
him on board a battle ship since

General von Hindenburg, once com
mander of the German armies, is
now living, on his HanoVer estate,
the quiet life he left to enter the East
Prussia campaign five years ago,
writes a correspondent Absence
of his uniform makes a big difference
in his appearance. Wearing a short,
rough coat and a panama hat, and
not very well cut trousers, his bur
ly figure looks as though it were
bursting out of his clothes. He
looks like a bank manager or an
ordinary German business man.
Frau von Hindenburg has a pleas

Fire Whistles Increase
Insurance Rates
Topeka, Kan., Oct 10. Fire whis
tles are almost a thing of the past
in Kansas. The reason is because
the fire insurance companies charge
higher rates in towns where there
are fire whistles. The companies
declare that a whistle is an added
risk because telephone patrons will
call up to learn the location of the
fire when they hear the whistle and
the work of calling the firemen
volunteers is greatly delayed, often
resulting in heavy losses.
Cape Cod Reports ,
. Big Cranberry Crop
Plymouth, Mass. Oct 10. Cape
Cod's cranberry bogs have produced
plenty of cranberries this year to go
with the turkey on Thanksgiving.
A government agent reported tht
estimates furnished by the growers
show 350.000 barrels of cranberries,
which is 150,000 barrels greater than
last year's crop.
Asks Divorce From Hubby

has brought a suit for divorce be
