' Bf International Jfewa Service Staff Correspondent. Boston, Oct.-4. Glance over the list of the professions, high salaried . and low salaried, and you will find hardly one that was not represented on the roster of the volunteer squad that directed Boston's traffic during ihe policemens' strike. There were bank presidents, law- yers, automobile manufactures and salesmen, schoolmasters, real estate brokers, insurance men, stock brok ers, veterans of the Spanish Ameri can war, veterans of the late world war, still bronzed from their life in the trenches and many others. , . Loads of Fur. -And there' was a girl, too. Bos- . -km had one for just1 five minutes. Miss Helen Coran, 20, pretty was the young Miss whose dainty smiles and innocent ' eyes just naturally ' made chauffers and yelping team sters automaticQly turn this way, and that She thought her exper ience was "loads of fun," but admit ted that she did feel a biCskittish. Miss Coran and, party of Boston beauties strolled into Copley Square during lunchvhour to get a glimpse of "Handsome Jack" Geraghty, the chauffeur who eloped with his wealthy and aristocratic employer's daughter Jack was, giving an imi tation of a living semaphore. They . had read of his sensational marriage ito Miss Julia Estelle French, of the swath he cut in society and later of his marital troubles. 1 "Handsome Jack." The curb of Copley Square was fringed by several core of equally curious girjs and "Handsome Jack" - KtnaA in the middle of the street in all of his glories of a close-fitting brown fall suit, a white barrd around "his hat and another one around his sleeve, a white flower in the buttqn hole of his lapel and with both arms waving cursing drivers hither and thither. A radiant sun served as a spotlight. Gallantly he escorted giggling girls across the street be tween rounds with the teamsters. Just at this point along came T. Franklin Brown, director general of the traffic squad the traffic batalion of 104 civilians. Brown wanted to give Geraghty relief, but no male candidate was in sight. Then Miss Coran saw her chance. Dimpling delightfully, she volun teered. With a white brassard around her coat sleeve and Geraghty's white gloves amply, cov ering her hands,' Miss Coran direct ed1 the teamsters with surprising ability until she', too, was finally "relieved." ; t Women Were Nightmare. Stnwood Miller, a piano manu facturer, former football star, did traffic duty in the Back Bay. "My neck was so stiff after my first day thatftould hardly put on my" collar, said Miller. "The women were my biggest nightmare. They wouldn t stay put They scoot past before you know it." , "Automobile manufacturers and salesmen are doing the greater part of the work." said Director Brown. "We have 38 points in the-city cov ered by traffic volunteers. There has been fewer accidents- than m 'normal times. Some of the volun; teers are on. duty eight and 10 hours "a day. They pay all their own s ex penses. We tell our squad "that emit and courtesv no farthest. This is no time for friction , and argument. The public has been fine. Some of the younger fellows have '- christened the equad the "Crossing Comedians," but every man is full of pep and is breaking his back and neck for public good. "Jess"WillarcT Is Dead -and "Jack Dempsey" Is Sold s San Francisco, Oct. 4. Jack Demp sey has been sold by O. P- More head, well known electrical engineer, $250. . "Old Jess" died last week. Go in Court Over a J Mere "Scrap of Paper" Reading, Pa., Oct 4. Another war over a mere "scrap of paper has been started here. Cooley Made Address to Crowd Beneath Dangling.Figure. The lynching of Will Brown in Omaha Sunday night was the first that'has occurred in this city since Saturday, October 10, 1891, when Joe Coe, alias George Smith, was hanged to a wire supporting the Harney street trolley wire in front or tne noya tneater, seventeenth and Harney street, just one block from the scene of the hanging of Brown Sunday night. ' Smith, alias Joe Coe, was charged with brutally assaulting a 5-year-old girl named Lizzie Yates, who was reported dead the afternoon-be-fore Coe was lynched. The alleged death of the little girl later proved to h without foundation. Taken Before Parents. The accused negro was taken from the city jail Friday afternoon and driven to the home of the girl's parents, living at 1712 North Eighteenth street, for the purpose of identification. He was dressed in different clothes than he wore at the time or the attack, but Mrs. Yates was quite certain he was the negro who ha.d been growling around the house representing himself to be a. garbage man. bhe said she would not be willing to sVear positively as to his identity. The little girl was still timid and very nervous from her experience. r.d could, not. be induced to look at the negro, so nothing could be obtained,. from her in the way of identifying her assailant- At 8:30 a crowd collected around the city jail, but they were told that the accused negro had been taken to the county jail By 9 there was a crowd of over 1,000 around the county jail yelling "bring out the nigger," numerous cries like this and almost at exactly the same time were heard at the courthouse Sun day night. , "Break the Door" -After a good deal of howling, some one yelled, "Let's break the door," and soon a line of men ap peared carrying a long, heavy post. Sheriff John F. Boyd appeared and standing on the steps said: "Gentle men and fellow citizens, as sheriff of Douglas county," I command you to disperse. I know what you want, but Smith is not here, he was taken away about supper time." "A fake, a lie," the crowd howled. After a moment the sheriff was able to continue, and said that he must do his duty and protect the jail. , ' "If I liad my way," said. Boyd to closing, "I would furnish the rope to hang the: wretch." Governor Appears. Governor James E. Boyd was sent for, and crowding his way to QUICK RELIEF FROM CONSTIPATION . i ... I implore you to cease and let the law. take its course. Be men and disperse." Councilman Moriarty grabbed hold of the bars over the '-.window of the jailer's office and urged the mob on. Moriarty started things by thrusting his cane through the bars and breaking jhe windows. A couple "dozen men took up the heavy post and using it as a ram, started to break through the, steel bars. This could not be done, and atten tion was turned to the window cas ing. Every stroke of the timber was greeted with -lusty cheers. Jailor Presents Gun. An old white-haired man, Uncle Jimmie Cannon, who was as much of a leader, as any one, said he would go and started to climb into the window, but he was met by Jailer Lynch, who held a heavy re volver at the old man's head and told him to get out. Then a 20 foot plank was, brought up and shoved into the room, clearing it of its occupants, who" retreated into the hall. Once inside, the crowd made short of the door -opening from the of fice into the corridor. The door opening into the large cell on the lower floor was' broken and the crowd made its way upstairs to the room where the negro spent the last hours of his-life. Break Steel Cage. Th door leading to his room was broken open and the crowd rushed in, surrounding the steel cage, in onC corner'of which crouched the miserable object of their search. A blanket was wrapped around him and he was endeavoring to conceal himself. The sight of the steel cage did not daunt the attacking party and demands for sledge ham mers, crowbars, cold chisels, etc., shouted through -the window met ith quick response from those out side and soon the noise of resound ing blows awakened the echoes out- Meanwhile. a dozen policemen stood outside, but they were utterly helpless and did not attempt to do anything. The crowd was con stantly receiving accessions, until about 10,000 people were collected. The hill about the jail was literally black with people, and Harney street, from Eighteenth V to Six teenth, was filled with a howling, surging mob. At this time the fire department arrived on the scene, but every at tempt of the men to connect a hose was stopped by ' members of the mob, the, same as occurred last Sun day. The hose was cut into bits. Seeing all attempts to turn the hose on the crowd wre useless, the fire men were withdrawn. Bring Negro Out At 12:25 the leaders of' the mob called to the crowd ito give them room to get out of the window of the jail office. With a blood curd ling yell,- the crowd gave way for the leaders and the doomed man. Several men sprang out of the window with the rope in their hands. and others shoved the half dead brute out the window. Then the most fearful work ever witnessed at the hands of a mob in Omaha, up to that time, was , performed amid the piercing yells of thou sads of desperate men. The rope was' grasped by nearly a hundred men, who ran down to Sev enteenth and Harney streets. The accused negro was dragged by the neck all the way and was nearly dead before he had been dragged ,100 feet.. The mob rushed upon him, kicking and jumping upon him as he was. jerked down over the rough pavement, his 'clothing being almost torn from his body and the skin and flesh bleeding in a shocking manner. , The leaders in the rope brigade made for a telegraph pole at the southwest corner of Seventeenth and Harney streets One of the lynchers climbed up the pUle, but found no -projection to throw the rope across, and quickly descended to lead the way to a pole that stood diagonially across the street, direct ly north and across the street from the Boyd theater. Strung Into Air. Within a short time the end of the rope was returned to the mob below, and in a, second the body of the negro was dangling in the air. Beneath the dangling body stood the mob, looking up at the object of their fearful revenge, gleaming in the' electric light, and their voices filling the air with the cries of a vengeance fully satisfied. While the majority of the great crowd quietly left for home, fully 1,000 persons remained and com pletely blocked the streets and side walks near the dead man.- Calls for speeches were sent up by the crowd. Julius S. Cooley was first spotted and compelled to make a talk. Cooley didn't say much of anything beyond claiming a great saving to the county by such action, and ad vocated the laws of Judge Lynch on account of celerity and economy. Heafy & Heafy s undertaking wagon drove up as the speech end ed and was greeted with cheers. Some cried: "Let him hang, d n him, let him hang." Amid such re marks' the body was lowered into the box, after having hung one hour, and with one final hurrah the wagon drove down Farnam street on a gal lop. ' Notwithstanding the terrific jam, no serious . accidents occurred, thbugh severat" persons were more or Jess injured, being knocked down and walked over. a Coe was a married man and had a wife and child, who resided in the al ley between Eleventh and Twelfth streets in the rear of the , Wells Fargo Express company. Flight for "Flu" is . .the Prescription New 'Lewistown, Pa., Oct. 4. The time has come when the diagnostican of bodily ills no longer , says: .."Go south for a change of climate." He prescribes:' "Take a trip through the air." This was the advice given by her physician to Mrs. Ammon Bubb. who had influenza last fall and had been jll every since. i - Despite her husband's objections that such a cure would be so dan gerous, Mrs. Bubb followed, the doc tor's advice. She obtained permis sion to fly to Bellefonte with Gilbert Bud wig. ' 'After the trip Mrs. Bubb declared she felt much better. The thrills, s'e says, have quieted her nerves a.id she feels that she will recover. Films Inspire Girls to , Beautify Themselves Chicago, Oct 4. It's the film that make girls so pretty, Lorado Taft, sculptor, and Miss Indiana Gy berson, Irish painter of women, have advance this theory as the principal reason for America's remarkably attractive girls. "See that lovely young girl there with the soft, fawn eyes, the angelic poise of the head' said Miss Gyber son. "See how she flings up her chin with the right touch of aristocratic audacity. She is a clerk and the product of the movies. Through imitations of famous stars, these girls are gradually ' being molded into their own ideals." "Girls are psychologically affected by the beautiful women on the screen said Mr. Taft "After seeing their favorite, they go home and practice for hours before a mirror. The outcome is graceful walking, pretty faces and vivacity." . ; 1 u Kansas to Reclaim More Than a Million Acres, Topeka; Kan., Oct. 4. To reclaim more than a million acres of Kan sas land is a task facing George Knapr commissioner of state irriga tion, former superintendent of the plant at Garden City. According to Mr. Knapp, only 40,000 acres are now being fed by pumping plants, and the rest of the 1,000,000 acres would mean a doubling of the homes in the Sunflower state if people but understood the wealth in irrigated land. Or Any Other Bank, Mercantile Agency or Trust Company Familiar With North Texas Oil Development. Congressional Sale Company TlO'i Indiana Avenue' , WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS OB . , ' .... . , . t $250 BRINGS $250,000.00 Less than a year ago you could have purchased a 5-acre Lease in Block 88 in the Northwest Burkburnett Pool for $250 that same five-acre Lease would sell today for $250,000.00. You would not have needed to drill a well on it. It would not have been necessary for you to spend another cent on it. The development of the surround ing leases-the wells drilled around you by others, causing this enormosu increase in value. !' ' :, , 5-ACRE LEASE BRINGS $800,000.00 It is reported that the Grey Gander lease in this field, with only one producing well thereon, has sold for $800,000.00. Only a few months ago we -could probably have sold you this same lease for a few hundred dollars. ' ; $100 BRINGS $41,600.00 You have doubtless heard of the thirty-six men who organized the "Trapshooter Oil Company" some time ago. These thirty-six men went in together and purchased an eighty-acre lease. A few months later they sold out for $1,500,000.00; each man receiving $41,600.00 for each $100 that he had invested. $250 BRINGS $83,000.00 You probably remember, too, of the twelve men in Ardmore, Oklahoma, who put in $260 apiece and formed the Coline Oil Company. This money was invested in leases which later sold for $1,000,000.00, so that each man received more than $83,000.00 in return for his investment of $250. ' ' " - BIG PROFITS MADE IN LEASES It is an absolute fact that more fortunes have been made in Texas during the pass-year in the sale of soil leases than have been made by drilb'ng oil wells, producing oil or refining oil. This startling fact is well known and thoroughly understood by thousands of shrewd investors. However, many people have the mistaken idea that all the big fortunes made in the Texas oil fields were made in producing and selling oil. v WELL COMES IN LEASES JUMP IN VALUE Today there are approximately 2,000 wells drilling in the various Texas oil fields. ' A lease may be purchased near many of these drilling wells for from $25.00 per acre to $50.00 per acre, A lease purchased today, near one of these drilling , wells, may within a few weeks multiply many times m value. The minute this well comes in a big producer, your lease will have a ready sale at from $500.00 to $1,000.00 per acre. The bringing in of this well proves up the surrounding territory. It in stantly transforms your lease into a highly-valuable, proven property. Your lease may now be worth even $5,000.00 per acre. Proven leases in some of the Texas fields . have recently sold as high as $30,000.00 or even $40,000.00 per acre. , , , Probably 75 per cent of the men who have made, fortunes in the Tetfas oil fields during the past year, did so by selling leases at an enormous figure, purchased a short time before at a few dollars per acre. ( BUY AN OIL LEASE Follow the example of these men who have been so remarkably successful BUY AN OIL LEASE. Remember, you don't have to drill on your lease. It will require no time or attention to look after it. Select a promising new oil field where no producing wells have, as yet, been brought in, but where many wells are now drilling. Buy a small lease near one of these drilling wells then, when this weir comes in a big producer YOUR PROFIT IS MADE. The big Companies will then hunt you up and pay you an enormous profit to secure your lease BOSQUE COUNTY SPLENDIDLY LOCATED - ' y Bosque County is situated about 35 miles Southeast of the famous Desdemona Pool, which, at the present time is undoubtedly creating more excitement, and bringing in more wells than any other field in Texas. Bosque County is only 15 miles North- . west of the South Bosque Pool, and lies between the Brownwood Pool and the Conic ana Pool. With more than 20 deep wells either drilling or contracted for in Bosque County, it is almost certain that this County will be the next "Big Excitement." BOSQUE COUNTY SURROUNDED BY.PROVEN FIELDS Corsicana to the East of Bosque County has the oldest oil producing "fields, in ' Texas, and the South Bosque Pool, with about 13 wells around 600 feet deep, has been producing the highest grade oil for over .15 years. Draw a line from Ranger to South Bosque, and one from Corsicana to Brownwood, and these (lines will cross near the center of Bosque County. The Sinclair Gulf, the Texas Company, the Humble Com pany, the Empire Oil & Gas Company, in fact, most of the big Companies are grabbing up acreage in Bosque County. The great amount of development work now in prog ress in this County should soon result in the opening up of a big new field. Many of the big Companies are expecting some big producers to come, in here. , INVADER DRILLING SYNDICATE The INVADER DRILLING SYNDICATE is now drilling in Bosque County. Our attention was drawn to this field several, months ago. Our geologists and expert field men strongly recommended this field to us. We were finally, after months of work, able to secure 4,512 acres of leases here. .We are convinced that we have the best leases in the entire Counjy. This vast amount of acreage is in almost a solid block giving us a wonderful Property. . Nt ' 4,100 ACRES DIVIDED INTO 5-ACRE TRACTS The INVADER DRILLING SYNDICATE has taken 4,100 acres and cut it up into Tracts of 5 acres each, making 820 of these 5-acre Tracts or Leases.- Please be careful to get this straight in your mind REMEMBER, we have a total of 4,512 acres . our Syndicate is retaining 412 acres, and is disposing of 4,100 acres this 4,100 acres making 820 Tracts of 5 acres each. Esti- - mating the cost of these wells at $60,000.00 apiece, makes a total of $1,200,000.00 to be expended here in the opening up of this new oil field. You know that THE IN VADER SYNDICATE would not be spending '$60,000.00 or $75,000.00 here if w did not expect to bring in a big well, i You know, too, that all these other big Com panies that are spending thousands and thousands of dollars here, are doing so only because they expect to strike some big wells. The fact that all these Companies are drilling here, shows that they have the utmost confidence in this field. LEASES JUMP IN VALUE OVER NIGHT It is, by securing a Lease near a drilling well in a new field of this kind, that enormous profits are being repeatedly made in the Texas oil fields. It is almost a daily occurrence for a Lease of this kind to multiply in value many times in a single day. We could tell you of instance after instance where such Leases have multiplied ten times, or even twenty times in valu, in a few days. Indeed, should our well come in a big gusher, it is hard to over-estimate the value of these 5-acre Tracts. These . ill whlch.maJ' now be purchased for $130 each, may then be in big demand at $5,000.00 or $10,000.00 each. As a matter of fact, this is a very conservative estimate - we know of 5-acre Tracts near big wells that have brought $50,000.00 to $100,000.00 and in some instances much more than that. , YOU GET AN INTEREST IN OUR DRILLING WELL The INVADER DRILLING SYNDICATE owns a one-half interest in this well which we are now drilling, and in the 412 acres of Leases which we have retained.
