Believe in ghosts? Then read on. It is whispered very, very softly ' that the ghost of William Brown, negro, who . was hanged Sunday night, is haunting" Seventeenth and Harney streets. Few have seen the ghost and an accurate description can not be se ""Ctired, but uncanny things are oc , curring at wee hours of the night if rumors can be believed. 'Tis said that the iron post where Brown was lynched sways to and fro, emitting a mournful wail as it moves. A pedestrian who, passed at the darkest hour last night in sists that he saw a rope hanging from the pole. The Ghost Speaks. He would have clutched the rope, he says, but suddenly a figure, large and threatening appeared and a hol low voice muttered, "stand back!" The man fled in terror, but re turned at break of day and found that no rope hung from the pole. The iron pole could not be shaken, and seemed to be solid in its founda tion. The man then went to a physician who declared that he was perfectly well. bttt a bit nervous. The doctor iaisaid to have questioned the man about his whereabouts Sunday night, and whether he ever used alcohol. ( The man replied that he was a prohibitionist, but admitted that he was in the vicinity of the Douglas county court house Sunday night. Moaning in Court House. Another man is said to have heard a moaning sound which seemed to come from the top floor of the court house He was not sure wheth er it was the wind or something j else. The theory advanced by some who believe in spirits that Brown's ghost has really returned, and will assist authorities in bringing mem bers of the Sunday night mob to justice. Charred Body of Lynched Negro Is Buried by County A death certificate ,was received vesterday at the health office, hear ing the name of Will Brown, negro, who was lynched Sunday night at the court house. "Bullet wound through body. Lynched," is the cause ol death as entered on the card by Dr. S. M. McCleneghan, coroner's physician. Brown's age is shown as "about 40," and his address, names of parents, and other data, are referred to as "unknown." 1 The charred body was buried at 10 yesterday morning in Forest Lawn cemetery by Silas Johnson, negro undertaket. No services were held over the body. Only the under taker and the driver of the hearse accompanied the body to the ceme tery. Charges for the burial were made to the county. Former Morals Squad . Officer Was Roughly ; Handled by Rioters Patrolman Thomas B. Crawford, former member of the defunct morals squad, believes he owes his . life to a tall and physically powerful young man, who appeared at the - proper time in the angry mob Sun day night. "I was working my way through the crowd at Seventeenth and Far jj, nam streets about 8 o'clock," de clared Officer Crawford. "Some one : yelled 'there's one of that 1 morals squad. Kill the ." . I was being dragged towards Sixteenth street. One of the mob demanded my revolver and I gave it to him. I thought my time had come. My rescuer came to my as sistance here. He argued with the crowd that I had done nothing. "The man jerked the rope from my neck 1 and finally pursuaded the crowd to release me. "I lost a $30 revolver, which I never expect to recover." Engineer Dies in Collision of Trains in Montana Helena, Mont., Oct. 1. Engi neer Sidney Sherwood was killed and two firemen badly hurt when a light engine and a passenger train on the Rimini branch of the North ern Pacific collided head-on near here this morinng.
