OF NEGRO BROWN
Spirit Said to Haunt Grim
. Post at Seventeenth and
Harney In the Late
Night.
Believe in ghosts? Then read on.
It is whispered very, very softly
' that the ghost of William Brown,
negro, who . was hanged Sunday
night, is haunting" Seventeenth and
Harney streets.
Few have seen the ghost and an
accurate description can not be se
""Ctired, but uncanny things are oc
, curring at wee hours of the night
if rumors can be believed.
'Tis said that the iron post where
Brown was lynched sways to and
fro, emitting a mournful wail as it
moves. A pedestrian who, passed
at the darkest hour last night in
sists that he saw a rope hanging
from the pole.
The Ghost Speaks.
He would have clutched the rope,
he says, but suddenly a figure, large
and threatening appeared and a hol
low voice muttered, "stand back!"
The man fled in terror, but re
turned at break of day and found
that no rope hung from the pole.
The iron pole could not be shaken,
and seemed to be solid in its founda
tion. The man then went to a physician
who declared that he was perfectly
well. bttt a bit nervous. The doctor
iaisaid to have questioned the man
about his whereabouts Sunday night,
and whether he ever used alcohol.
( The man replied that he was a
prohibitionist, but admitted that he
was in the vicinity of the Douglas
county court house Sunday night.
Moaning in Court House.
Another man is said to have heard
a moaning sound which seemed to
come from the top floor of the
court house He was not sure wheth
er it was the wind or something
j else.
The theory advanced by some
who believe in spirits that Brown's
ghost has really returned, and will
assist authorities in bringing mem
bers of the Sunday night mob to
justice.
