ment(at the close, today' stock market
received with apparent Indifference th
news that the labor leader had ordered
a general atrlke of tb steel worker.
Reports and gossip current In the fin
ancial district hinted that joint action
might yet be taken by representatives ot
capital and labor to postpone or defer In
definitely the proposed walkout, but these
were not Credited In foremost Industrial
quarters. 1
Prices were Irregular at th outset, coon
developed moderate heaviness, but revers
als wer almost Immediately overoom
when the short round that stocks were
not pressed for sale. v
For the balance or th session until
th final half hour th market moved
sluggishly, but with a confident under
tone, th so-called "strike" stocks hold
ing firm when not comparatively strong.
The late reversal was coincident with
rumors that the president ot the American
Federation ot Labor had decided to lend
his unqualified endoraement to the steel
unions, having failed to change the at
titude ot the United Sates Steel corpor
ation. United States Steel moved within a nar
row area most ot the time, but made its rec
ord of the week toward the end, declining
to 10116, a loss of 1H- Allied ahares,
which had been 1 to 3 polnta higher with
equipments, reacted to the same extent
and tobaccos, shippings and food issues,
early features of strength, also yielded
under fairly extensive liquidation. Sales
amounted to 775,000 shares.
The market for Liberty bonds was again
active and strong, second 4 Ms making a
substantial gain with th fourth and
the aecond 4. Reports that the govern
ment was buying in some of the issues
lacked confirmation. Railroad and in
dustrial bonds were Irregular. Total sales,
par value, aggregated $18,360,000. Old
United States bonds unchanged on call.
