Stocks moved to materially higher levels In early part of today's broad dealings on reports that the labor unions bad reconsidered their steel strike order, but part of this gain was lost later when these reports ravt with qualified denials. Another development which served to check the advance was the further slump of exchange ratea to France and Italy, both falling to lowest quotations ever recorded In thla market with German bills. Otherwise the trend of advices over the week end was of a character calcu lated to sustain the substantial upward progress mads In the final days of the preceding week. Industrial canters showed a derided In crease of production of steel and iron and further contracts for railroads were said to be under negotiation by the Railroad Administration and railroad earnings gave promise of improvement. Another event of Interest and encour agement was the easing of time funds, these being shaded to 6 3-5 per rent es against the long prevailing 6 and even 6 which borrowers were made to pay on the less acceptable collateral, call loana also relaxing moderately. Although trading encompassed many different issues including rails. Interest gradually centered In steel equipments, motors, oils, tobacco and sugar. Oils re cording best quotations towards the close when the tendency elsewhere was towards moderate reactions. Sales amounted to 1,050.000 shares. The bond market reflected further un certain tendencies, chiefly due to heavi ness of utilities and several of the lead ing rails, this being balanced however by the activity and strength of liberty Is sues and the firmer tone of Internationals. Chicago, Sept. 16. Signs that for the time being liquidation was at an end brought about a sharp rally today in the corn market, after new crop deliveries had fallen to the lowest prices yet this sea son. The close was strong, c to 2c net higher, with September $1 37 and December $1.20 1.20 14. Oats finished lc to lc up, and provisions varying from $1.60 decline to 40c advance. The day was almost half over before bullish Influences had any noticeable ef fect on corn. Notwithstanding reports that the steel strike had been postponed, corn values at first continued weak, dom inated by agitation for lower food cost. Upturns In tho value of hogs were also temporarily Ignored. On the ensuing de clines In the corn market, however, offer ings passed Into strong hands. Then the shorts scurried to cover, and during the rest of the day the buying side was the favorite. Gossip that Germany had re ceived American credits counted to soma extent as a bullish factor. Oats swayed with oorn. Considerable notice was taken of the Hoover statement that export business waa a matter of credits. Seaboard buying of lard gave strength to that commodtty, but only partly over came weakness ot pork. Art. I Open. I High. I Low. I Close. I Yest.
