couraged holders brought about a decided

higher prices paid for hogs here. Specu
lators, however, did most of the buying of
hogs at the advance, uackera refualnsr to
follow. Under such circumstances, demand
for corn was soon restricted to shorts, who
were in position to collect profits. For
the remainder of the day, bearish senti
ment was virtually unchecked, owing to
disturbed economic conditions. On the
ensuing breaks, December, the principal
trading month, showed a decline of 6O0 a
bushel since July 2.

All provisions were lifted bv tha advance
of hogs, but pork and ribs dropped later
when grain turned weak. Lard held firm
on account of belief that lard would be
