Corn feds were slow at unevenly lower prices; a few choice yearlings at $17.7518.25 were about steady, but heavy cattle were hard to sell at declines of 25c or more. Butcher stock continues in good demand and sold strong to a little higher again this morning. Feeders which closed lower than yesterday were slow to weak again today and have more than lost Monday's advance. Very little desirable western beef was here, and while the trade was a little slow, values looked fully steady with yesterday. STEERS AND HEIFERS. No. Av. Pr. No. Av. Chicago, Sept. 3. T5rastlo new setbacks In the value of corn took place today, largelj- aa a result of assertions which re ceived widespread notice that the crest of the high cost of living had been passed and that a considerable drop was In pros pect. After an extreme break that com pared with yesterday's finish reached 8Hc a bushel In some cases, the market closed nervous 2c to 5Hc net lower, with Septem ber, $1.677)1.67. and December, $1.31H 1.314. Oats finished 4c to e down, nnd provisions unchanged to a loss of $1.02. New low levels for the season were reached by the December and May deliv eries of corn. The new records sTiowed that prices for the two months named had depreciated about 25 per cent during the last few weeks. Lack of support rather than aggressive selling was responsible for the Intensified weakness today. It was pointed out In thin connection that a nearly uninterrupted advance of seven months had preceded the recent decline. Although sentiment at the close was a little more mixed than has been the cass of late, the buying power appeared on th'e whole to be still limited to shorts who were In a position to take profits. Oats were held relatively steady owing to a moderate demand from cash houses. Provisions, like corn, were depressed by current statements from Influential sources that foodstuffs were to decline. The opening; was 5 points higher to 4 points lower, and December sold up to 17.70c during the early trading, or about 6 points higher. Aside from scat tered covering after the break of yes terday, there was little support, however, and a special cable reporting declines in Santos futures led to renewed selling. Trading on the atock exchange today ran niaiuly to specialties under control of powerful speculative interests, half a score of these contributing extensively to the very ac tive and sensational operations of tha aesslon. Criet among these was Crucible Steel, which scored a further rise of 17 points to 194)t, a new high record and an ad vance of almost 60 points over its final price of a week ago. Buying of Crucible suggested something more than a mere route of shorts, but so far as could be learned, there was nothing on which to basse widely circulated ru mors of a "corner In that stock. The most conspicuous Issue was Bald win Locomotive. In which there was an enormous turnover at an extreme rise of 16 points, accompanied by gains of 3 to 10 points, In other equipments and steels, also affiliated shares. Less extensive gains were made by mo tors and oils, these In a few Instances being altogether effaced In tha latter deal ings, despite the increased dividends de clared ou Mexican and Pan-American Pe troleums. American Woolen, Barrett Company, Leathers, shippings and tobaccos partici pated In the upward movement at extreme gains of 2 to 8 points, a few unclassified specialties deriving almost equal benefit. Ralls opened with a show of strength on publication of official flgure fore showing best earnings, wage Increases excluded, Isnce last September, but this Improvement was forfeited, excepting among minor Issues, where the Inquiry was well sustained. Sales amounted to 1,500.000 shares. Bonds were firm to strong on modoerate dealings, with a better Inquiry for rails. Liberty 3s touched par. Total sales, par value. $10,676,000. Old United Slates bonds were unchanged on call. Crucible Steel engaged the further at tention of traders ut mld-dav, reacting six points and rallying four. Other specu lative issues were affected by the erratic course of that stock but made partial recovery on renewed buying of United States Steel and other standard stocks. United States Steel and other leaders reacted slightly later, but came forward again in the final dealings on further heavy buying of Crucible Sleel and Bald win Locomotive. The closing was ttrong. Improved industrial condition en couraged bull pools to resume their op erations in the stuck market today. Steel and equipments were most favored at gains of 2 to 17 points. Sales approxi mated 1,350,000 shares. Laat Sales High Low Sales Am. Beet Sugar. 600 88 87 87 Am, Can 14,400 67 65V 66 AmC Car & F... 26,600 138 134Vt 136 Am. H. & L. pfd 1,600 127 125 126 Am.
