Henry A. Wise Wood, secretary of
the League for the Preservation of
American Independence, recently re
ceived the following letter from Dr.
Alexander Graham Bell of Washing
ton, in which the latter declines the
invitation to join the league:
"In reply to your recent communi
cation, I may say that in my opinion
there is absolutely no use in making
any peaces treaty with Germany un
less a guarantee is provided to assure
the carrying out of the peace terms.
That guarantee' is the organization
of the league of nations; and the
covenant therefore should form an
integral part of the peace treaty and
not be separated from it and con-

nature of a compromise and like all
compromises cannot be entirely sat
isfactory to all of the parties in
volved, but the covenant itself pro
vides means for amendment after the
league has been formed. This being
so I would strongly urge the ratifi
cation of the league of nations cove
nant, without amendments or reser
vations that would delay peace or
endanger the treaty by making nec
essary its resubmission to the sig
natory nations.
"I must thank you for your invi
tation to join the League for the
Preservation of American Indepen
dence. The title appeals to me for
no one can be more anxious to pre
serve American independence than I
am. But after examining with care
your declaration of principles I am
surprised to find that the associa
tion you ask me to join is not a
leacue for the preservation of Amer
ican indenendence at all, but simply
'represents a camouflaged attack on
t ne constitution oi inc league ui na
tions the noblest attempt yet made
to bring about harmony and co-operation
among the nations of the
world in the interests of peace and
civilization.
"The declaration starts out with
the absolutely false statement that
the constitution of the league of na
tions would deprive the American
people 'of basic liberties won by the
Revolutionary war, or subsequently
acquired, among which is their inde
pendence.' "Having thus set up a man of
straw the attempt is made to knock
him down by the organization of a
league ostensibly for the preserva
tion of 'American independence,'
which is not threatened. So far from
interfering with American indepen
dence the constitution of the league
of nations attempts to extend to the
whole world the principles of liberty
and justice for which our fathers
fought and for which we Americans
stand.
"I cannot conscientiously join
your organization; and must urge
with all the earnestness in my power
that the constitution of the league
of nations be promptly ratified by
congress, and feel sure that this is
the desire of the great majority of
my fellow citizens."
Bolshevik Means I
Am Bigger Than You,'
Says Russian Writer
London, Aug. 23. In response to
various inquiries as to the exact ety
mology and meaning of the word
bolshevik, the following interesting
definition is supplied by a man long
resident in Petrograd:
The word bolshevik is a bastard
formation from the word "bolshe,"
the comparative of "bolshoy," which
means big. "Bolshe" signifies, or is
equal to, "bigger." The suffix "vix"
is used with substantives to indicate
the agent, e.g., parovik is a thing
that works with par, which means
steam; parovik literally signifies
steam-er, but in Russia usually
means locomotive. Bolshevik an
impossible formation from an adjec
tive means simply "bigger-er."
Originally contrasted with men
shevik (signifying littler-er), it has
come to have a specialized meaning
of its own.
Long ago in the socialist demo
cratic party were two sections, bol
sheviks and Mensheviks: the former
wanted the socialist millenniunj at
once and were prepared to use any
and all means to get there; the lat
ter sought the same ends step by
step they were the Fabians of the
party.
But for a couple of years past,
ever since, in fact, the Jews took
hold of Russia, bolshevik has gained
a very simple meaning: "I am bigger
than you hand overt" is now the
full significance of the bolshevik's
political creed. Bolshevism is, oi
covrse, a doubly bastard formation
the Greek termination ism tacked
on the impossible bolshevik, and
the equivalent to the un-English
word. "Bigger-er-ism."
The words Bolshevik and Bol
shevism alone to any qualified critic
cf languages affords sufficient proof
that the movements so labeled are
not Russian in origin or growth.
They are alien' and the products ,of
the alien.
Russian is a language as flexible
as Greek, and, with a fuller vocabu
Iry, perfectly capable of expressing
in Russian without bastardising the
n. other tongue, any ideas whatever.
But Russians, of all the nationali
ties affected, have had least to do
with the rise and growth of the
abominations of our day on Russian
territory. These amount in plain
truth to nothing else than a Chris
tian pogrom, and are not the product
of Christian brains.
W. C. Crandell, Civil
War Captain, is 85
Years Old Today
W. C. Crandell, 3806 South
Twenty-third street, former captain
in the civil war, is today cele
brating his 85th birthday. Mr.
Crandell was born in the state of
New York in 1834. He moved, with
his family to Elmwood, 111., when
he was 10 years old and later moved
to Omaha.
Mr. Crandell was a private in
Company G, Eighth regiment, Mis
souri volunteeers, and after the bat
tle of Fort Donaldson, in which he
was wounded, he was appointed
captain of Company F, 77th regi
ment, Illinois volunteers, by Gov.
Richard Yates of Illinois.
He was married when he was 22
years old and has seven children,
five daughters and two sons. Two
sons and two daughters are living
in Omaha. He had been married
62 years when his wife died a year
ago. Mr. Crandell has 19 grand
children and 23 great-grandchildren.
He is a carpenter by trade,

Takes a Little Vacation After
Five Hard Years Devoted to
business of the
Empire.

Parliament after five haru years
devoted to the business of the
Empire, is again learning to play.
Last week it occupied a stand along
the Wall, while the fighting men
of the allies passed in review. This
wee'.c it continued its peace celebra
tion by visiting the fleet a 1
off the mouth of the Thames at
Souther.d. And on both occasions
it cas: aside the dignity and hoary
customs of its ancient legislative
halls, enjoyed the novelty like a lot
of school boys out for a frolic.
Monday the Lords saw the ships,
a comparative small and select party
which left London late and came
home early. Tuesday it was the
turn of the Commons, who cheered
the best known fighting ships.
I he Baimorel Castle, which carried
the Commoners and their wives
first circled the fleet, the "Lizzie"
as the voyagers affectionately
termed Admiral Eeattv's flagship,
the Queen Elizabeth, be;ng especi
ally admired. Then the Warspite,
which the Germans said they had
sunk at Jutland, the Lion, the Tiger
and i lot of other big ships came in
tor admiration, while the Conquerer,
the Thunderer and some of the
smaller fighters were greeted as old
friends.
The Ralmorel Castle then steamed
do. n through the center of the
fleet. On one side were the big
ships; on the other submarines,
chasers and destrov:rs. Few sailors
were in sight, but the crew of a sub
marine were loudly cheered as they
took position on deck for a few min
utes, and then went about some task
set by their commander. A de
stroyer suddenly spouted smoke,
gathered speed like an automobile
and tore out to sea.
But that was all the commander
showed of his fleet. There was no
firing of salutes; no orderly manning
of the rails. Just the ships, silent
a:.d grim, beloved by all of the Eng
lish people as their first line of defense.
Doughboy In Marines
Finds Difficulty In
Securing Discharge
Quantico', Va., Aug. 23. How a
doughboy unwittingly became a
marine and the difficulties he ex
perienced in getting away from the
soldiers of tie sea has just been re
vealed here.
Serg. Friedman, dental corps, U.
S. A., after service in France, board
ed a transport home that was loaded
with marines. On arrival in the
United States he went with the ma
rines to their camp at Quantico.
There he found himself a full-fledged
marine with no chance of getting
tack to the army. No one at Quan
tico had authority to transfer him
and it looked like Friedman, was to
remain a marine.
Finally, however, he was allowed
liberty to go to Washington and pre
sent his case to army officers. Last
week he was transferred to the
dougboy camp at Camp Meade, Md.
but for the last seven years ha been
employed" by the government in the
bureau of animal husbandry.
"I feel good for an old man," says
Mr. Crandell, "and I work every
day. I can walk five miles without
any inconvenience and I write and
read without glasses."

the Episcopal board of missions and
high and low church leaders are
talking about trials for law break
ing, ruin of work long established
in the Philippines, and demanding
that their church, if possible at a
convention soon to be held 5n De
troit, once for all settle whether the
Episcopal church does or does not
teach the doctrine of the real pres
ence maryolatry, and that Episcopal
ministers can forgive sins. Three
missionaries in the Philippines
taught and practiced these things.
Bishoo Graves of Shanghai, in tem
porary charge in the Philippines,
ordered them to quit doing so.
Bishop Brent of Buffalo, formerly of
the Philiooines. came to the rescue
of the missionaries and asked that if
anybody is to be officially blamed,
let him be blamed.

sions must decide, but it is made up

Service In Army Does Not
Absolve Criminals, Ruling
Washington, Aug. 30. Loyal
service in the army during the re
cent war cannot be considered as
wiping out a soldier's past, the judge
advocate general has ruled. An ad
verse opinion was rendered on the
question of whether a man possess
ing a criminal record before enter
ing the army could be re-enlisted at
this time.
Recognition of Peru Cause
Of Great Surprise In Chile
Santiago, Chile, Aug. 30. Great
surprise was caused in political, dip
lomatic and administration circles
here today by the announcement
from Washington that the United
States recognized President Leguia
as head of the de facto government
of Peru. It was indicated that this
step was not expected.
American Sailors
on Mine Sweepers
Hate Sight of Fish
London Aug. 30. American sail
ors on mine-sweeping duty in the
North Sea, probably will not crave
fish when they get back home.
. When mines are exploded in the
process of clearing out the barrage,
thousands of fish are killed.
One of the little sub-chasers in the
fleet scoops up hundred of pounds
of them each evening when opera
tions cease for the day, and distrib
utes among the several vessels fof
food. The men enjoyed it for a
time, but now hate the sight of fish.
One catch included a salmon which
was cruising around miles out from
land. Anglers say that a salmon
should not be so far from land.

Big Storm Strews Wreckage
Along Coast of Brittany
Lorient, France, Aug. 30. The
coast of Brittany for miles north
and south of here was strewn with
wreckage during a great storm yes
terday. At Locqueltas a life boat
and wreckage, apparently from an
American ' merchant ship, were
washed ashore. The name of the
boat could not be deciphered. The
storm was abating today.
