8 D THE OMAHA SUNDAY BEE: AUGUST 31, 1919. ASKS PERMANENT U. S. TRANSPORT RESERVE UNIT Fleet Capable of Transporting 142,000 Troops Is Proposed by War Department In Reorganization. Washington, Aug. 30. Organiza tion of a permanent "transport re serve" capable of carrying 142,000 troops, is proposed by the War de department as a part of the army reorganization plan. This reserve, with the regular army transport fleet would make it possible to move an expeditionary force of nearly 200,000 men immediately on the outbreak of war. The plan as outlined by Brig. Gen. Frank T. Hines, in charge of the army transport service, contem plates reserving title to 15 of the former German passenger ships and a number of cargo carriers, with their allocation to commercial lines on the conditions that the crews be enlisted in the transport re serve and that no structural changes in the vessels be made by the operators. All of the ships are now in perfect shape for army use and General Hines would have them subject to periodical inspection by army engineers. The Leviathan, George Washing ton, Mount Vernon and Savannah are among the ships listed to be retained if congress approves the plan. 159 Planes Are Available For Use of Army On Border Washington. The Nebraska state fair will this year attract thousands of autoists out onto the roads of Nebraska headed in the direction of Lincoln, and for the special convenience of the autoist, the National Touting bureau of the B. A great deal of attention is being paid this year to taking earc of the great number of autoists who will drive to the fair, and the comfort and convenience of all has been amply provided for, in the way of parking and camping. Fearing "the fate of Socrates" eight drug addicts at Mie riverside hospital went on "strike" today against continuation of hyoscyamine treatment. The revolt came after one of their number consulted a dictionary and found the hyoscins was the modern name for henbane, which he de clared was the same drug with which Socrates was forced to end his life. The "strikers" were sent to the Blackwell island work house. Squeaky Springs. In cases of chronically squeaky springs, try jacking up the car so that the weight is removed from the springs and then soaking these latter with kerosene. Run the car fcr a day or so to let the kerosene soak in and then saturate the springs with some of the old oil that has been drained off from the crank case. After a clay's run wipe oil any excess oil that shows to prevent the collection of unseemly dust. HYMENEAL Erickson-Axelson. It is possible to build up battery posts that have worn down by slip ping a section of cast iron pipe, cut to the proper length over the old post and then melting new post metal in by means of an acetylene torch.
