A drop of 50 to 75 cents a 100 pounds was recorded with the close $1 under Friday. The best offerings, that brought $22.80 a month ago, sold for $17.05, the top price for Friday. Hogs sold at around. $20.50 at Saturday's close. Since then drops in price of $1 or more have been recorded daily. The $15 level is expected to be reached soon. Agi tation against the high cost of liv ing and lack of eastern demand are given as the reasons for the slump by commission men. Cattle There was the usual Friday's moderate run of cattle here today, early estimates calling for 2,400 head. Trade was very slow on all classes. Western beef and butcher stock showed a some what easier tendency and being very hard to move at any price. Feeders were In light supply and anything decent was picked up in -good season at about steady prices. COWS. No. Av. Pr. No. A v. Pr. 8 846 $7 50 11 1030 $8 00 WESTERN CATTLE. Silk was steady, with wool quiet and firm. Heavy weight burlap was strong. Cotton yarns were dull Chicago Grain and Provisions Chicago. Aug. 29. Another decline In hog prices, making In round numbers a $3.00 decrease since Tuesday on the hoof, caused grain and provision prices to go down at the opening of today's market. The bearish sentiment was accentuated by the Washington campaign against the high cost of living. The drop was short lived in the market for future delivery and shorts seeking to cover found few offertngs available. Corn prices after having touched a new low record point for December and May advanced to about three cents above yesterday's final fig ures. Oats and provisions moved up with corn Impelled by the buying desire of the short element. Corn closed strong at near the high points, lc to 34c net higher, all de- veries sharing In the increase. Closing prices were September $1.78 H to $1.79 and December $1.38 to $1.39. pats finished to Hie higher and provisions closed strong at nearly the top with pork $1.25 to $2.00 higher. Lard 40c to 45c higher and ribs at an advance of from 25c to 77 cents. While corn prices were on the up grade traders received a report that the Kansas corn crop would fall .short of expectations. This tended to strengthen the market in spite of the bearish live hog prices and the general belief that high costs were being undermined. Cash corn prices were lo to ic lower with fairly liberal supplies received and a general opinion that arrivals would hold up Well for some time. Oats partook of the fortunes of corn, falling early on the general beartshness and advancing later when oats shorts met the same limited market seen In corn. Cash oats were about one cent lower though receipts for the day were small. Provisions decreased in value at the start, recovered later and under the Influence of covering trades, which found only limited supplies available, advanced to well above the final figures ef yester day. 7he cash trade was dull. At the close September pork sold at $41.25, September lard at $27.62 and September ribs at $21.92. Art Open. High, t Low. I Close. I Test. New York, Aug. 29. Bradstreet's to morrow will ssy: There are more cross currents In the general trade, Industrial and labor situa tion, but unlike recent previous weeks, some of these currents are In the direc tion of Improvement. The president's stand on the subject of railway wages. the evidences elicited or popular sup-1 port of his action, the access of what migm do termea soDer secona xnougnt among labor men and some really defi nite reductions In prices of foods at wholesale, have made for slightly more optimistic feelings as a whole. It is felt tn some lines that while a possible countrywide steel works strike tmpends, the outlook Is not so disturbed as It was one or more weeks ago. Weekly bank clearings. $7,065,690,000. New York. Aug. 29. With the exception of foreign exchange. In which the London rate made further forfeiture of Its recent recovery, events affecting the stock mar ket today offered decided encouragement to the long account. The firm attitude of the railroad ad ministration In dealing with the Pacific coast strike situation, and the federal court decision favoring the Southern Pa cific company In the Ions pending oil land case. Imparted a buoyant tone to the list at the opening which ruled In the very active cloae. The Southern Pacific decision wss most Influential, not only because It affected an extreme advance of nine points In that stock, but because of its affect upon the entire oil division, where gross gains ranged from 3 to 12 points. Kails as a whole were stimulated by the government's stand. Steels were again tn a class by them selves on the further activity of Crucible, which sold considerably over yesterday's high record and scored a net gala slightly In excess ef 10 points. Allied shares made more moderate head way, although Bethlehem and United States Steels were especially prominent In the final hour with Baldwin Locomo tive, metals, tobacco and food issues, American Can also profiting by the general demand. Sales amounted to 900,000 shares. Conditions In the bond market, where trading was relatively light, were very mixed, rails ss a whole showing Irregu larity, aside from the stronger tone of transcontinental. Foreign bonds were firm, but Liberty Issues continued to lose ground, the second fours making a low record at 92.66. Total sales, par value, aggregated $9,860,000. Old United States bonds were unchanged on call.
