New York. Aug. 2. Sucn considerations
as usually govern the course of the stock
market were Ignored or swept aside today
In the Increased Importance which at
tached to development In the labor sit
uation. Rejection by ths railroad shopmen of
President Wilson's offer and the refusal
of Chairman Gary of the United States
Steel corporation to "discuss business"
with a committee of organised labor were
the outstanding Influences of ths day.
On the other hand, the Iron Age, the
recognised organ of the ateel lnduary, as
serted that "nothing In he events of the
week changed the judgment of the ateel
trade that the strength of the stork move
ment has been grestly overestimated."
Stocks were heavy at the outset, but
rallied in the course of th first hour,
only to fall back almost Immediately with
another recovery before noon on renewed
buying of equipments and specialties.
The market became unsettled again In
the last hour on Judge Gary's letter to the
union labor delegation, United States steel
snd other leaders, equipments, then re
ceding to lowest quotstlons of the day.
Reactions from maximums ranged from
one to almost four points.
Ths one obvious case of cause and ef
fect was furnished by Montana Power,
which made an abrupt decline of nine
points on ths reduction of the quarterly
dividend from IV. to of 1 per cent,
due to "unsatisfactory business."
Chandler Motors forfeited Ua 10-point
gain of the previous day and an additional
2 hi and rails were adversely affected on
moderate offerings, with shippings, mo
tors and oils. Salea amounted to 735,000
shares.
In general the bond market kept pace
with stocks, speculative Issues declining
ons to one and s half points.

Chicago (iraln and Provisions.
Chicago, Aug. 27. Grain and provision
prices were weak today, bearish sentiment
finding a basis In widespread conditions
of industrial and economic unrest with ex
tensive strikes looming as a not remote
possibility and agitation and actlori against
the high cost of living a present reality.
Corn led the grains in the decline, Its
downward course being stopped and ral
lies, effected when oversold conditions
appeared. Broadly speaking, however, the
averages for the day was lower with bear
ish sentiment predominating. Corn closed
weak c to lo net lower, with Septem
ber at (1.78 to (1.79 and December
(1.40 to (1.40. Oats closed easy with
a net decline of c to c: and provi
sions finished with a decline of 85c for
pork; 35c for lard and 68c for ribs.
September shorts were In evidence on
the buying side and the nearby delivery
after leading In the early decline, also
took the lead In the rallies. Car scarcity
and consequent delay In moving the grain
crop was commented on by traders as a
factor which would have to be reckoned
with. Crop reports were generally favor
able and arrivals were moderate with a
fair eastern demand.
Sentiment In the oats market waa less
bearish than in corn, but the market con
tinued lower, despite persistent commis
sion house buying on the breaks, which
occasioned many rallies. Country offer
ings were light and receipts notably small
for this time of the year.
Provisions were weaker and decidedly
lower. A sharp decline In live hog prices
worked against all products, though pork
felt the full force and declined 86c at the
close after having sold at more than (1
below yesterday's final figures.
