Chicago, Aug. 25. The corn market was unsettled today. Prices at the start were lower, followed by a bulge which gave way on moderate selling early, to rally again with a stronger undertone which held prices fairly strong until the close of the session, though fluctuations were observed throughout the day. Commission house buying was the prin cipal support of the rallies. Corn closed Wrong at nearly the top flgurea of the day, prices being 1H to 2Kc net higher, with September at 11.804 to 11.80Vs, and December at $1.4314 to $1.43. Oats closed a shade down to c higher, net. Offerings ot Texas corn In large Quan tities and a general bearish sentiment among traders were given credit tor com pelling the declines and shorts seeking to cover, together with commission house desire to buy. brought about the upturns. Country offerings were heavier, but ship ping demand was not Impressive. There was a fairly active domestic de mand for oats. Prices moved in sym pathy with corn and rallied after an easy opening, though oats prices fluctuations were In narrower limits. . Receipts were less large than had been expected. Clos ing prices were near the top. Provision prices averaged lower witn grains through most of the session and the advance at ths finish was moderate. The greater part of the trade was In lard. Art. Attempts, evi dently of professional origin, were made to depress prices at the outset of today'a dtill stoclr market, but these were aban doned after the Initial stage, the list closing with a number ot substantial ad vances. Early selling, which caused lesders, especially speculative isauea, to decline from one to seven points, seemed to have its genesis mainly In last Saturday'a un favorable bank satement and the more adverse Industrial advices over the week end. The confidence with which stocks were absorbed on the reaction prompted hasty covering of shorts. The rebound not only canceled most losses, but waa materially assisted by the first Impressive demand for rslls since the promulgation of the ultimatum by the railway brotherhoods. Buying of transportations coincided with suggestions that an Increase of the railway wage scale, which Wall street generally regards aa highly probable, will be accompanied by another advance In freight rates. Another encouraging factor was the sustained strength of sterling exchsnge, which augmented Its recent belated re covery, demand bills on London selling at their best quotation since the early days of last week. Call loans opened at 6 per cent for both gradea of collateral, holding at that figure throughout the session, In com parison with last week's final rats of 8 per cent. Time money ruled at the fa miliar 6 per cent with a smaller In quiry.
