Lumber Man Instarftly Killed
While On His Way to First
Floor Room 60 Years
Old.
William C. Bullard, 60 years old,
well known as one of Omaha's most
prominent business men, was killed
early yesterday by a fall down
stairs from the second floor of his
home, 700 North Fortieth street.
The coroner's physician, Dr. B. A.
McDermott, announced the cause of

held, the county attorney's office
announced
Body Found in. Morning.
The body, lying on a landing, was
found by by -Harry bhedd, a son-in
law of the dead man. He made the
discovery shortly before 7 yester
day morning.
Mr. Bullard attended a dinner
party at the Carter Lake club and
returned to his home at midnight
He spoke to members of the house
hold when he came in. It is thought
he might have heard a noise down
stairs and descended to investi
gate it.
The body was cold when Mr.
Shedd found it. Dr. McDermott
said death was probably instantan
eous and stated that Mr. Bullard had
been dead five or six hours.
Romance of Business.
His life story is a romance of big
business. He came here 3Q years
ago from McCook, Neb., unac
quainted and with meager funds.
His personal magnetism and a
reputation for integrity drew to him
a circle of influential acquaintances.
He became affiliated with the Hoag
land lumber interests and though
other businesses engaged his time.

the Bullard - Hoagland - Benedict
Lumber Co.
He was president of the Pruden
tial Building and Loan Co., secretary
of the Omaha Sanitary Supply Co.,
a director in several . other Omaha
corporations, and owned a chain of
lumber yards in small Nebraska
towns. He is said to have accumu
lated a fortune of $500,000.
He was a member of the Omaha
club, Field and Happy Hollow clubs;
was a 32d degree Mason and a
knight of Ak-Sar-Ben.
Mayor Smith, long a personal
friend of Mr. Bullard and his legal
adviser, was called to the home im
mediately after the body was found.
Mr. Bullard is survived by his son,
W. C Bullard, jr., and a daughter,
Mrs. Josephine Ellingwood. His
wife died two years ago, and another
daughter, Madge, wife of Harry
Shedd, was an influenza victim last
winter.

be in charge of the Masonic order.

Teacher for Last 30
Years, Dies in West
Miss Mary L. Alter, for the past
30 years a grade school teacher of
this city, died Ihursday morning, m
Los Angeles, Cal., where she had
gone for her vacation, according to
word just received by her sister,
Mrs. W. S. Wilcox of Omaha. Miss
Alter had lived in this city for more
than 35 years. She taught in -many
ot the grade schools of the city and
was well known here.
Besides by Mrs. Wilcox she is sur
vived by two other sisters, Mrs.
Mattie Ward, Salsbury, Mo., and
Mrs. Julia Kinney, Denver, Colo.
The body will be taken to the
family home at Camp Point, 111., for
burial Monday.
Omaha Railway Clerks
Oppose Wage Increase Bill
Opposition to the Zihlman bill,
which would grant railway mail
clerks an increase of $400 for the
year ending June, 1920, has been ex
pressed by H. G. Alexander, presi
dent of the Omaha branch of the
Railway Mail Clerks' assocation.
The local association has gone on
record as opposed to the bill and
the members are petitioning their
congressmen to defeat the bill.
A demand for a flat increase of
75 per cent has been submitted to
Postmaster Burleson by the railway
mail clerks.
Doctor Sued.
The Standard Motor Car company
of Omaha has filed suit in district
court against Dr. Robert Nichols to
recover $30.90 alleged to be due the
concern for repairs made to the phy
sician's automobile in October, 1918.
