The corn market av eraged higher today, though the best prices were not maintained. Trade was largely local In character and buying on the low points was noticeable. The sell ing pressure diminished somewhat, the rally in foreign exchange from its recent extreme, low points being a factor which worked against a bearish market. The present premium of the cash product over September also told sgalnst declining prices. Corn closed weak, unchanged to lc lower, September showing the greatest decline. Final figures were: September, $1.8401.84, and December, $1.4494 0 1.44. Oats closed a shade higher to c lower, and provisions finished 45c lower to 66c higher. January lard exhibiting the only decline. Domestic demand for corn showed Im provement today and purchases of large quantities of the Texas grain were re ported. A tendency to swing away from bearish sentiment was observed In the oats mar ket, as In the major grain. Oats prices ran sorrtewhat higher, fluctuations being in narrow Jimlts, selling pressure being apparent at the close. There was no evi dence of foreign demand, but the domestic trade .was active. Country offerings were moderate. Provisions advanced generally, the bulge In foreign exchange contributing to the strength. Advance In live bog prices was a contributing factor and offerings were more liberal on the upturns. Pork, led the advance. Art. I Open. I High. I Low. Close. I Yes'y. Stocks made fur ther Improvement today over their suc cessive declines of the early days of the week, the rally carrying greater convic tion because It was accomplished on a small turnover. Traders seemed disposed to take a less pessimistic view of the labor situation and evidence of support manifested in the foreign exchange market served as anoth er reassuring factor. Much "literature " and gossip emanat ing from brokerage and commission houses was of less cautious tenor and no small part of the day's buying was cred ited to Interests recently committed to the short side. Bull pools were moderately active In such recent favorites as motors, oils and tobacco, where extreme gains of 2 to 8 poln4s were made, equipments, leathers, textiles and sugars also strengthening variably. Marked revival of Interest In metals was noted, for which higher prices for September delivery were quoted, but also for other metals which enter extensively Into the manufacture of various peace in dustrials. The only stocks to reflect pronounced weakness were Industrial Alcohol, which fell 7 points on the proposed new capital Issue, and Wilson company, which for feited much of yesterday's large advance. Final prices eased on the 8 per cent call money rate. Sales amounted to 785,000 shares. Bonds were Irregular on ' the lower prices made by various speculative rails.
