New York, Aug. 20. The more confi
dent feeling created yesterday by the
speedy settlement of the traction strike
was completely dispelled today by fresh
misgivings regarding current financial and
Industrial problems.
Prices were firm to strong st the out
set, but essed all around before midday
and weakened before the close on the ab
solute demoralization which prevailed In
the foreign exchange market and grow
ing apprehension as to the outcome of
the steel workers strike vote.
Favorable developments, such as tho
reduction of the bank acceptance rats
and prospects of an amicable adjustment
of differences between Pacific coast oil
refiners and the Navy department were
Ignored in the more obvious events of
the day.
Call money also offered ground for un
settlement, the easy rates of the opening
hardening appreciably In the final hour
on withdrawal of funds by Interior banks
to meet demands In their respective lo
calities. In connection with the further slump
f exchange In London, Paris and Rome,
which extended to other continental Eu
ropean centers. It was rumored that the
French government had entered Into ac
tive credits, but no confirmation was
forthcoming from high financial Inter
ests. Authorities scouted the Idea of a pro
tracted strike tn the steel trade, but their
views were not shared by traders, as In
dicated by United States Steel's decline
to 98 , its lowest price in four months,
and a drop of 1 points.
Reversals in other standard stocks
ranged from 3 to 5 points, specialties sus
taining losses of 6 to almost 10, the mar
ket closing almost at lowest levels. Sales
amounted to 950,000 shares.
Liberty bonds were fairly steady, but
the general list. Including foreign issues,
was heavy. Total sales, par value, ag
gregated $10,675,000. Old United States
bonds unchanged.
Another decline In United States steel
which fell to a new low price for the cur
rent movement, unsettled other industrials
and the general list in the last hour. The
closing was weak.
Reactionary tendencies tn today's stock
market resulted mainly from renewed la
bor disturbances and the further collapse
of foreign exchange. Sales approximated
90,000 shares.

Chicago Grain and Provisions.
Chicago, Aug. 20. The corn market was
Irregular and exhibited a succession of de
clines and rallies, closing firm after a
speedy working away from late low points.
ijigni onerings, a turtner decline in for
eign exchange rates and the demands of
shorts were contributing factors. The close
was nrm, lftc to 1 c net lower on dis
tant months and c to lo net higher
for September, the only delivery flnishintr
at an advance.
Closing prices for corn were: Sentem.
ber, $1.84 to $1.84 and December
$1.43 to $1.43. Oats closed o lower
to 'Ac higher and provisions finished un
changed to 20c lower.
Sentiment in the corn market was more
mixed than of late) and prices underwent
rapid changes. Some of the early sellers
bought freely later. Most of the trading
was of a local character. The decline In
sterling exchange was apparently Ignored
after the opening and a firm tendency
showed Itself, rallies following every sell
ing movement, commission house buying
was eviueni on me low points.
Oats followed the course of corn with a
firm undertone, most of the time and re
sistence to selling pressure In which a
domestic cash demand figured.
Provisions moved generally with grain.
Export business was hampered by the low
foreign exchange rates. The undertone
was weakv toward the end of the session,
