Chicago Grain and Provisions.
Chicago, Aug. 16. Sharp breaks which
took place In the corn market today were
largely owing to the. fact that sterling
exchange had dropped to $4.25, a new low
lecord. Corn closed heavy at lc to 3Vc
net decline, with September $1.82 and De
cember, $1.43 to $1.44. Oata lost lo
to lc. and provisions. 10c to 70c.
Weakness In the corn marTtet wss evi
dent from the Outset. Most of the earlier
selllnff, however, appeared to be based un
anticipation that railroad traffic, which
had been rPWeicted by the shopmen's
strike, would be back to normal Mon
day. Bears assumed that therefore the
volume of corn receipts here and at other
Important terminals would probably li
creuse. Week end covering by shorts ral
lied the market, but at this Juncture he
attention of traden began to center on
the extreme weakness of foreign exchange.
Throughout the reat of the day corn
prices kept on the downward grade, and
finished at about the lowest point reached.
Oats weakened with corn. It was re
ported that the greater part of new crop
offerings were Unusually light In weight.
Provisions gave way to the depression
of hogs and grain. Upturns associated
with the bullish showing of the semi
monthly figures on warehouse stocks
failed to last.
