There were violent fluctuations in tha market for coffee fu tures here today as indicated by the course of December contracts, which sold at 20.35c early, or 46 points net higher. broke to 19.55c. or 34 points net lower and finally closed at 19.93c, compared with 19.89c yesterday. The opening was 24 to 36 points higner on the big recovery reported in Santos futures, which private cables attributed to government buying of near months there to clear til market of undesirable grades of Rio coffees. This led to ac tive covering, but buyers seemed to have been pretty well suPDlied on the early advance of 44 to 46 points and the market weakened later under renewed liquida tion, which may have been promoted by agitation against high prices and was at tributed largely to Wall street Interests. These offer ng caused a rapid Dreatc oi 75 to 85 points from the best, but the market recovered 85 or 40 points of the loss In the last few minutes, with the close net 8 points higher to 6 point lower. Bradsireet'a tomor row will say: "Industrial unrest 1 still widespread, new strikes number many thousands of workers, the agitation over price condi tion continues, accompanied by numerous seizures of food In warehouse or stores and the prices of many staples, especially in speculative markets, are still unsettled. On the other hand, however, there seems to Te rather leas tension in the situation as a whole, the tock markets appear to have reached something like an equi librium, the shopmen' strike, with all that It Involved in the way of checking the current of the country's trade and In dustrial life, has been called off, some of the weakness tn pricea, as, for Instance, in corn and hogs, ha been aided by the bet ter trend of crop reports and finally, the great mass of trade reports, while testify ing to the considerable unsettlement rul ing particularly In markets for foods, are almost unanimous tn s-howlng that dis tributive trade In many line ha not been greatly checked and, Indeed, is of a very full volume for an ordinary quiet midsum mer period. . Chicago, Aug. 16 Indications that as a result of yesterday's sharp break In prices rural holders of grain would at tempt as much as practicable to with hold offerings led to an upward swing of values today In the corn market. Clos ing quotations were firm, c to 2'ic net higher, with September $1.86 to $1.85 and December $1.45 to $1.45. Oats gained lo to lo and provisions 12 75c. Advance in the corn market were preceded by sharp new declines which carried the May delivery down to the lowest point yet for the crop. This set back was largely due to an accumula tion of selling order before trading be gan and to government activity In press ing measures to reduce the cost of living. Shorts, who were In a position to collect profits started buying, however, and were followed by commission house when evi dence multiplied that country holder did not propose to rush shipments at a aao riflcc. Oats showed Independent strength. Bid ding was urgent for the kinds needed by Europe. Buying that was ascribed to packers rallied provisions despite big new cuts in the value of hogs. FINANCIAL New York, Aug. 15. The aimless drift of today's dull and uninteresting stock market session was the combined outcome, to a large degree, of tomorrow's holiday and tha further marked absence of public interest. At no period since the reaction of the past fortnight baa the character of Hie trading been so obviously professional or more restricted as to volume and variety of Issues dealt in. News of the day was conflicting in Its favorable and adverse aspect, call money falling to lowest quotations of the week on th Increased supply, while the for eign exchange market was in the throes of fresh demoralization. These development seemed to exert little or no effect, however, the ebb and flow of prices deriving their sole Impulse from further short selling, balanced at Intervals by the bullish activity of pools In some of the closely held specialties. Local tractions were almost the only Issues that reflected existing or Impend ing conditions, weakening on small offer ings induced by the more acute- stagi In the labor situation. An Irregular opening was soon succeed ed by heaviness, this In turn giving way to moderate firmness at midday. On rather free selling In the final hour, many moderata gains were canceled. United States Steel being among the few notable exceptions st a gain of one point. Sales amounted to 735,000 shares. On today's further declines, French ex change was at a discount of about 35 per cent, while Italian rates Hbowed a depreciation of almost 45 per cent, dealers predicting still lower quotations. Bonds in general were heavy, the Lib erty group alone holding steady. Total sales, par value, were $11,650,000. Old United States bonds were unchanged on call. Am. Am. Am. Am. Am. Am. Sales. Am.
