As I listened to Kenneth Stock bridge's voice, outlining to ine the directions for finding . the secret drawer in his desk the part of my brain not busy in retaining the direc tions "was repeating over and over again: "He doesn't know that his wife has already opened it. How shall I tell him?" But in another moment I found that I was reasoning from mis taken premise, for the principal, after finishing his directions, added hesitatingly: , r "I have reason to believe that the receptacle has already been opened and papers extracted from it. But I wish to be certain that if and the rest of the desk have been swept clear of every' personal paper as soon as it can be accomplished." "As it happens, it will take me about one minute to do what you ask," I answered promptly. "When you sent the request to get the school reports from that desk'' "Did Miss Holcombe -"Ah! I had forgotten," he in terrupted nervously, dismay in his voice. "You see, I had not learned at that time that the desk had been tampered with, i Did did -Miss Holcombe search for the papers?" "No, I did," 1 returned, "and I found it in such confusion that I had to sort the papers and put everything in order before being sure of the reports. So all your personal belongings are fastened together in one package. I have only to open the secret drawer, take out its contents, if any, wrap them with the package and lock your desk again." Too Geverly Hidden. "Thank heaven 1" The involun tary ejaculation was fervent, im oassioned. "Please get them at once and then go to your home as quick ly as possible. And under no cir cumstances tell any one, especially Miss Holcombe, that you have them until vou hear from me. I cannot explain now, but I will, and relieve you of the papers at the earnest nossible date. Thank you, and don't worry pver anything that may have been said to you. I have at tended to that. Goodby." . The receiver clicked on the hook before I had a chance to voice the protest on my lips. All my instincts revolted at keeping Mr. Stock bridge's papers in my possession, even though I realized that his mo tive in asking me to do so was to make sure that nothing in the desk should. fall into the menacing hands of his wife. There was nothing else to be done, however. I had promised the man to look for them -he evidently thought that implied keeping them so I hurriedly locked the desk and tried to find the secret drawer. But I failed utterly to find any trace of it. EitheT I had misunder stood the directions or Mr. Stock bridge, in . his agitation, had not given them to me correctly. I worked for fully 10 minutes before I forced myself to admit that I was utterly at sea. , My common sense whispered to me that if I could not find thej secret drawer with Mr. Stockbridge's di- PHOTOPI.AYS. Are the eyes the most characteristic feature? A woman can not be beautiful, it is said, unless she has pretty eyes. The eyes you see here are those of a very charming Omaha girl. . Can you recognize the girl by her eyes? Her name and addreBS mu uc given with the picture tomorrow. The picture yesterday was the eyes of Miss GraceAllison. v rections, no one else could find it without them. I reasoned that Milly Stockbridge must have discovered it through her husband's carelessness. He might have closed the little re ceptacle insecurely and his wife's frenzied, searching fingers have come accidentally upon it. And she had been enabled to open the desk because in his hurry to get to his injured friend he had forgotten the key? It would be easy 'to guard against that contingency. I took out the package of papers, which I had wrapped in an additional covering, locked the desk and put keys and package in my bag. . By this time I was shaking with a nervous chill. I could not rid my self of the impression that some thing menacing had come to Milly Stockbridge as. she was shrieking insanely at me over the telephone. I should have spoken to Mr. Stock bridge about it, but he had rushed througr the conversation so hurried ly that I had had no chance. And I did not know where to call him even if I had dared to do so. I tried to comfort myself with the assurance that as the principal was in town I had no need to worry my self over the matter, that he would no doubt be at home in a few min utes, but my walk to the station seemed to me to be under lowering skies of vague terror. Post, formerly executive officer of the U. S. S. Minnesota, will arrive in this, city in a short time to relieve Lieut. C. E. Maas of his duties as chief naval recruiting officer in this district. Lieutenant Maas will remain at this post as assistant to Commander Post and executive officer of the station. The change was made in accord ance with the new policy of the Navy department, which requires officers of higher rank to be sta tioned at recruiting stations. Commander Post was stationed in this city in 1912 and married an Omaha girl. The U. S. S. Minnesota, which he commanded during the war, was se verely damaged when it strucka German mine. BIG SALE HOUSEHOLD DRUGS, TOILET AND FANCY GOODS FRIDAY AND SATURDAY THIS WEEK At the Five Sherman & McConnell Drug Stores When you trade at our stores you ma ke a substantial saving in price and are sure of finding the VERY ARTICLE you desire and always of guaranteed freshness and genuineness. S" UPPOSE you had to hesitate every time you wanted to clasp your wie m your arms to make sure that she really and truly was your wife would you like it? Of course not. The entire pleasure of clasping the woman you love in your arms and pressing burning, tender kisses on her mouth is the spontaneity of it all. Even the woman who prpddly proclaims that she cannot thrive on a diet containing a grain of sentiment will "fall for the cave-man'stuff." Bui if you have to think and ponder and wonder if you're kissing the right woman each time, all the thrill and pleas ure are gone and both parties are the losers. That's one of the numerous reasons why it isn't one of the most delight ful things in the world to be a twin. It's "hard" on her and on the man she loves. Vi and Tiny Playfair were twins and they weren't "tickled to death" over the fact, either. It wasn't the pleasantest thing in the world to have people staring at you continually and know that they weren't admiring the way your hair was dressed or the pretty frock you had on or commenting on your beauty, but that they were simply looking at you because you were a novelty a twin. There right beside you stood your double, identical in face, form and clothes. It wasn't so bad 'for Vi and Tiny when they were kids and utterly un conscious of the furor they aroused wherever they went. But when they grew up and each had a beau, then the trouble began. Each of the girls knew which man she loved and who loved her, but she couldn't always take' the initiative. She couldn't always rush into the arms of the man she loved and tell him that she was his "angel-child." But there was no other al ternative. Neither man could distinguish his sweetheart when both twins were present. And the result was a grand, general mix-up, which came to a climax when Vi's husband ran away with Tiny on his bridal night, think ing that she was his lawfully wedded wife. On the whole, it's a mighty lucky thing for the world that twins are a novelty, but it makes a corking good comedy for s x ALICE BRADY and can be seen today and tomorrow at the Oh, yes, if you want to know the title of the picture, it's "HIS BRIDAL NIGHT" Shoe Polishes Making shoes last longer is largely a mat ter of taking care of them ; they need' polish and oils or cleanser to keep them looking well and to lengthen their wearing period.
