gneep it was another busy day In the
shee.. market, one of ths largest of the
season showing up. Receipts were esti
mated at S3.O00 head, more than the com
bined receipts of the five other leading
markets. In spite of the generous supplies
packers made an early canvass of the
offerings and fat grades started moving
at prices fully steady with yesterday, the
best fat lambs sold up to $16.76 and any
thing bringing less than $16.00 was of
rather common quality. Ewes are still
quotable up to $9.00, and wethers claim
a limit of $10.00.
Demand for feeders continues very
broad and today's trade was a lively af
fair at generally steady prices, more of
the desirable feeding lambs sold at $14.26
914.60.

FINANCIAL
New York, Aug. IS. Trading en ths
stock axchanga today was extremely su
perficial and again restricted to special
ties, apart from further activity In equip
ments, oils and allied shires, which have
been the prominent features of recant
sessions.
While consldsrably In excess of yester
day's moderate turnover, ths volume of
business afforded a striking contrast to
the long succession of dsys when opera
tions averaged 1,600,000 shares, occasion
ally running well beyond that Impressive
totsL
Ths most reassuring feature of the ses
sion was the greater ease of money, call
leans opening at 6 to 614 per cent, but
shading sppreciably after midday on an
over-abundance of offerings.
Excepting Baldwin Locomotive, which
materially augmented yesterday's sub
stantial gain in the'early hours on re
ports of favorable recapitalisation, only
to react abruptly later, and American
Telephone, where a further decline of $
points accompanied adverse dividend ru
more, there was little of an obvious char
acter to furnish an Incentive In either
direction.
Trading was most active and highly con
fusing in the final hour, when stocks of
-the same class moved contrarlly, an Ir
regular heavy tone prevailing at the close.
Sales amounted to 960,000 shares.
United States Steel and affiliated stocks
and also the rails recorded minimum quo
tations tn the final reversal, the reac
tion among other leaders, Including Cru
cible Steel and Baldwin Locomotive, rang
ing from 3 to 6 points.
British exchange rates were steady, bat
fresh weakness was shown by French and
Italian remittances.
High grade bonds, notably railway Is
sues, eased, the foreign group and the
Liberty Issues also shading slightly. Total
sales, par value, $11,850,000. Old United
Statea bonds were unchanged on call.

GRAIN. MARKET
Chicago Grain and Provisions.
Chicago. Aug. 11. Notable falling off
In the volume of dealings formed the
principal feature of the corn market to
day, and was generally ascribed to the
uncertainties attending the labor situation
and the movement to curtail the cost of
living. Price changes were narrower than
usual. The close was unsettled, a net
lower to Ho advance, with September
I1.1H to $1.91 and December 1.6H
to 81.61H. Oats finished lo to Ifco up
and provisions at declines of 10 to I
cents.
Most of the trsde In corn was of a
purely local character, and In small lots.
The public as a rule appeared to have
withdrawn from the market and to be
awaiting more denlte developments of an
Industrial and economlo character. Mean
while, the September delivery had a mod
erate upward slant in price the greater
part of the time, owing to the scantiness
both of arrivals and of the available
stock here. On the other hand, the new
crop months, December and May, tended
downward In value as a consequence of
reports that there had been widespread
sosklng rains which were expected to Im
prove the crop outlook. Shortage of sup
piles ss compared with a year ago gave
strength to oats.
Provisions showed no evidence of any
aggressive support.

The Greatest Thinginthe WorldToday is
THE commerce of the world is dependent on it; warships,
merchant ships, railway locomotives and stationary power
plants of all kinds burn it as fuel. Its principal ref ined product,
gasoline, furnishes the exclusive motive power of trucks, farm
tractors, automobiles and airships. There is not a single tool
or piece of machinery throughout the whole world than can
function without oil as a lubricant.
V
Reconstruction and Development of International Commerce
The discovery and practical application of steam laid the foundation
of international commerce ; electricity brought the nations of the world into
commercial conversation with each other, but it remained for the gasoline
motor to completely revolutionize national as well as international com
merce. Transportation by land, sea and 'air has been quickened. Both
freight and passenger traffic has been speeded up to a degree beyond the
wildest imagination by use of the gasoline motor. The vital question today
is whether the production, refining and distribution of oil can keep pace
with the demand for these products. Large reserve supplies of both crude
and refined oil have been used up during the war. The. rapid conversion
of railway, ship and stationary engines from coal to oil burners, the con
stantly increasing construction and operation of trucks, farm tractors, pas
senger automobiles and last, but by no means least, the practical utility of
the airship, cannot fail to impress the thinking man with the vital im
portance of maintaining an adequate supply of oil to keep the wheels of
these vast industrial developments moving.
What the World Needs, It Must Have and Will Pay Well For
The great north Texas oil fields are now said to be producing ap
proximately 250,000 barrels of oil every day, valued at $2.25 per barrel, a
stupendous source of riches in itself, but that is only the beginning. The
ration from a financial standpoint, oetween crude oil and its refined prod
ucts are about the same as between the price of fresh grapes and cham
pagne. To verify this statement you have only to recall the price for high
grade motor oil and gasoline used in your automobile. s

Production, Pipe Lines, Refinery and Market
The Pullman Oil & Refining Company proposes to reap every penny of
possible profit from the oil business from production to the consumer. We
have the organization, available capital and the will to accomplish what we
lertake. We now have two wells drilling right in between the biggest
shers in the great Desdemona oil fieM and will soon have eight more. Our
No. 1 F. M. Daniel well is now on the oil sand and will be drilled in within
the next three or four days, as soon as we can get pipe line constructions.
It is directly between the great Warren Wagner and Echols wells, both
making from five to eight thousand barrels per day each. Arrangements
are now being made for the construction of our pipe line and 3,000-barrel
refinery. It is to finance this great undertaking that we are offering stock at
$1.00 per share. s -
Pullman Oil & Refining Company stock will not be available to you
at par much longer, and it is recommended that you send in your order
direct to our home office, as the company reserves the right to advance the
price should our No. 1 F. M. Daniel well come in strong enough to justify
3uch action, or to withdraw the unsoli balance of the present issue of stock
from the market without prior notice.
