The extremely active and very irregular course of trading on the stock exchange today was almost wholly traceable to Impending develop ments at Washington and the extension of labor troubles. Prices of active stocks, seasoned as well as specualtive Issues, were one to five point higher at the excited opening. Ralls and a few of the high priced spe cialties, BUch as tobaccos, proved the only conspUious exceptions to the rally, which gave way, however, to another extensive selling movement at midday. For the balance of the session the rec ord was one of almost steady betterment, favorites among Industrials. notably United States Steel, reflecting accumu lation of a substantial character. Short coverlnlg contributed In no small degree to the market's stability, with numerous gains of 2 to 10 points. Sales amounted to 2,060,000 shares. Bonds were weak at the outset, specu lative issues losing 1 to 2' points, with partial recoveries later. Total sales, par value, aggregated $L 760.000. Old United States bonds were un changed on call. Anticipations which were more than fulfilled that the govern ment crop report would be bullish did a good deal to turn the prices of all deliv eries of corn upward today at the last. The close was nervous, c to 4c net high er, with September $1.89 o to $1.90 and December $1.50 to $1.514. Oats gained H6c to lc. In provisions the outcome ranged from 15c decline to 10c advance. Government figures on the prospective yield of corn came too late to have any direct Influence on the market. The un official estimates, however, indicated such a decided reduction in the eventual crop total that bearish and dull factors were at least temporarily counter-balanced. Al most from the outset, too, the smallness of contract stocks of corn in Chicago had made shorts in the September delivery anxious and had forced the price of that month sharply higher. It was not until the last hour, though, that largely owing to evening up for the government report, the depression in the December and May options was overcome. Oats swayed with corn. Guesses before hand on the government crop report as to oats were generally bullish. Labor difficulties that made hog values weak were reflected by provisions. Trad ing most of the time was very light. Art. I Open. I High. I Low. Close.
